Any suggestions on dinghies and davit systems for our Ranger?

This is a loaded question, much like anchors, batteries and tow trucks. In my opinion it depends, depends on how you'll use a dinghy and how often. Is it for emergencies or for regular use? Hypalon will wear better the PVC but is more expensive but well worth the extra money. Whether you use a Weaver fold up dinghy davit system or a Hurley system where the dinghy sits flush with your swim platform the dinghy should not be wider then your 10 foot R31 beam in order to negotiate locks and docks without running your dinghy into either. Soft bottom, vs fiberglass hard bottom or aluminum hard bottom again depends on how you will use you dinghy and the depth of your wallet or desire......there is no wrong answer, all work just fine, you need to make the proper dinghy fit according to your wants, needs and desires. Defender usually has great prices and service on dinghies and outboards.

Do a search within Tugnuts for "Dinghy" and "Davit" and you will find lots of discussion that should help.

Thanks for your reply. We'll be using the dinghy on a somewhat regular basis. We are intending to go with soft side and considering the seawise system.

The Walker Bay 8 and Wheeler dinghy davits are an ideal combination for our R-25. Easy to launch and retrieve, holds the boat steady for walk on and walk off boarding and the Walker Bay 8 is nearly indestructible.

We bought the sail kit, dinghy, and tubes on Craigs list for about $750 - roughly the going price. Zooms along with sails or a 4 hp engiine, and is dry for two people. If you need more, the 8 will hold 3 for short trips, but it sort of ends there.

Might want to consider a kaboat. They are slim inflatable dinghies wider than a kayak but slimmer than regular dinghy and come in various lengths. I haven't bought one yet but seriously considering. Light weight and easy to handle.
