Greetings one and all,
All of a sudden, my Garmin 7612xsv chartplotter is not showing any depth. It is on my 2017 R-29S, which I bought used last June.

I have turned it off and on several times, and that doesn't work.

Has anybody else had this problem? Suggestions welcome.

Thanks,

JtheK

Make sure there is oil in the base of the depth sounder. It’s located slightly port of the center line in the back of the boat by the rudder. If you see any oil residue, it’s leaked out. Happens when the base cracks or becomes unstuck from the fiberglass. I cleaned mine up really well, used silicon to Adhere it to the hull and added mineral oil. Problem solved. Used to happen to my other boat also.

The problem may indeed be at the sender end. But try unplugging the sender from the back of the Garmin, and plug it back in. Mine goes out on occasion, and I unplug it and judiciously spray the male and female ends with contact cleaner, let dry. Comes right back.

I had the same problem last fall but my boat is a 2019 29S . I assume the depth sounder may have changed locations at factory? Anyway, mine is located on starboard side in lazarette. Need someone small to climb in there, and the hole in the floor is about 2' forward. My small friend did it by slithering forward, removing the already loose cover down in the access hole, filling it with fluid, and screwing cover down again. Forgot what I used for fluid and I'm traveling now so no access to my records for a few weeks. Thinking it was anti freeze though.

Good Luck.

I had a similar problem with my 2012 R25SC. I had just updated the Garmin software when the transducer stopped working. I spent more than 5 hours over several calls to Garmin and another hour with Gemeco the makers of the Airmar transducer. On the 2012, Ranger Tug did not install the transducer sleeve that holds the fluid. The transducer was glued directly to the hull. I am not sure on which model year they stopped using this install method. I called Ranger Tug and after trouble shooting the issue finally determined the transducer had failed. It was just a coincidence that the transducer failed when I applied the Garmin update. I replaced the Airmar transducer but, I installed the fluid sleeve. Airmar recommend using RV anti-freeze as the fluid to fill the sleeve. As the previous post said, you have to make sure the sleeve has a watertight attachment to the hull. I used 3M 5200.

I’ve used water before also. In fact, salt water in a previous boat in a bind. Probably any liquid would work. I was told many many years ago to use mineral oil. It’s worked well for me so haven’t put effort into finding something else but definitely messier when it leaks. Haven’t put the energy in to call Garmin to ask. But would be interested in hearing the answer if the OP does.

Problem solved! I conferred with two trusted Ranger Tug aficionados and figured out the solution.

We had to open the aft-most lazaret and unscrew the top of the hockey-puck-shaped transducer, which is located about eight inches to the port of centerline. Do NOT undo the square-drive screws.

Once undone, I could see that the area underneath was bone-dry. I filled it with one-half cup of antifreeze, and put the lid back on.

Turned on the chart plotter and the depth numbers immediately populated their respective places on the screen. Again, mine is a 2017 29S, and the location of transducer appears to be different depending on the year of the boat.

I’m pretty sure I’m also having this problem!

Where is the transducer on a R-31 CB circa 2018?

Also, should the Garmin be showing the transducer as “built in,” and is it 50/200khz dual frequency? Thanks!

On the 2018 31 you pull the aft seat forward, lay down something soft over the genny, then standing on the aft port corner of the cockpit lay down over the genny/backside of the aft seat. On the backside of the hull, starboard of the genny, near the transom and to the starboard side of the stringer is the Airmar. Quarter twist left and out it comes.

Unless the goo has failed. Then it all comes.

And yea, it’s a dual 50/200 khz.

It’s an in-hull not a thru-hull right??

Does anyone have a picture of what this "puck" looks like? I have a 2015 R31-CB LE and now showing 0.0 depth on Garmin.

TIA.

Sorry , no picture. Google Garmin P79 inhull transducer for photo. Should be what you are looking for.

Thank you - very helpful. Now i just need to find it.

Heronboy above had the proper location for our 2015 R31-CB (LE). IT was loose on the floor and was NOT attached with a base - just glued directly to the floor.
