We were unable to attend the group get-together in Desolation Sound but watched weather reports. It sounds like it was fairly breezy. How was it? Did anyone have trouble getting there in the time allotted?

We have an 2007 R25 and spent 7 weeks in coastal BC this year (mid-May-June). We had more wind this year than any of the previous 6 years. We had to seek refuge in "the nearest spot" several times because of winds higher than predicted and coming up sooner in the day.

Just curious.

We can't give you an update on the rendezvous but agree that we have had some fairly windy periods this year in comparison to others. We reside a few miles south of the entrance to Desolation Sound and found ourselves grounded for days at a time due to the windy weather.

Looking forward to an update as we may head up that way later this week.

I have been getting reports from fellow yacht club members that herds of Ranger Tugs have been sighted in the Gulf Islands heading north. I'm guessing these are the Desolation Sound bound tugs. Weather at this end of the Gulf Islands was breezy on Saturday, rain and calm on Sunday, beautiful sunshine and light winds yesterday and today.

I flew up to Gorge Harbour on Saturday. The strait was calm but I could see Comox getting plenty of rain. On the Cortes Island side it was partly sunny with light showers.

Sunday was a glorious day, and the boats began arriving around 1130 after a smooth, slow crossing. The docks were full of Ranger Tugs and Cutwater boats by 1300. They reported high winds earlier in the week and the flotilla chose to hold over in Ladysmith an extra night before heading up to Comox.

Monday was another hot a calm day and we enjoyed a glorious evening barbecue dinner. Tuesday was another beautiful day, with all but a few boats fanning out to various destinations around Desolation, Octopus Islands, and Dent. I flew out of the harbour around 1200. We made a few pickups before heading south. All the way down Georgia, across Juan de Fuca and Admiralty, the seas were calm.

I'll post a few pictures to this thread later.

Cheers,

Bruce

We are heading up to Desolation Sound tomorrow from Lund. Where do we head to meet up with some of the Ranger Tug group? 😀

They'll be all over. From Octopus Islands to Big Bay, Dent, Homfray Channel to Prideaux Haven, Tobas Wildernest to Walsh Cove. Some have headed north. Some have headed south. Many are in the cruising grounds.

Cheers
