Diesel powered outboard ?

Hi Baz,

We have a 25 HP kicker (gas not diesel). Though it’s being assessed by insurance currently. Zincs went on it, not elsewhere. Trying to determine if rouge electrical current or wiring issue caused it. $5k if we need to replace it. We’re 2nd owners. Not sure how much it originally cost to put it in.

My interest in a diesel powered outboard is for a backup for my R29 CB's 300HP Volvo Penta D4 engine. Having a diesel backup outboard it can be fueled from my main diesel tank with some additional fuel line modifications. Not sure about steering capability having this backup outboard, but there's an optional remote control for it. However, it would be useful for getting home if ever my D4 died when out on the water in a remote location. The motor I referenced is quite heavy at around 175 kg or 386 pounds.... so it's quite a heavy beastie.

Barry,
My browser informed that was "not a secure link" and wouldn't let me connect.
PS- you have a PM.

Jim: My browser shows no such issue !!!!!!!!!!!! I'm using Apple's Safari Version 12.1.1 (14607.2.4.1) running macOS 10.14.5 Beta 3 build (18F118d).

Firefox denied access due to unsecure link, Safari worked.
They claim at least twice the life of a gas motor, at almost 3 times the cost and 100 lbs heavier!!! Biggest selling point to me is same source of fuel. But for the cost and weight difference, I would be tempted to find a safe space to store some gas.

I've found other 40HP diesel outboards for $3K to $5K. 😱

Diesel outboards have been around for a long time but have not had a market in the U.S. due to there weight, it looks like yanmar is one of the front runners in trying to reintroduce the diesel outboard, mostly for commercial use.
My concern would be parts and service, not a lot of marine mechanics have the knowledge and parts are not stocked.
Am not sure as to size of motor required to get a R-29 CB to safe harbor with main engine failure, but is probably a lot less than you would think.
I love diesel engines but until there's more support for the outboards I would stick with the conventional gas, along with remote throttle and remote steering, as far as the life of the gas motors they will out last me! Don't want the kids to make too much money at the big yard sale in the future!

I think Oxe outboards are the front runners. https://www.oxe-diesel.com/

They have some high horsepower models now. Could be an interesting replacement for the tugs.

Yanmar is coming out with a new 50 hP diesel outboard, should be on the market soon! But have not found any dealers in the US.

I wonder that due to all the diesel car emission scandals that have occurred around the world causing customers to walk away from diesel cars, that there is a glut of spare diesel engine capacity lying around at amazing cheap prices which means these independants like OXE and COX can pick up the diesel blocks for absolutely nothing and then wrap them into an outboard. I think the OXE unit is a GM diesel 2l under the covers.
