Hi,

We find ourselves more and more interested in having a dingy along for some of our trips. My CW 28 didn't come with a dingy or davits. I have a 260cm roll up dingy and 2.5HP Suzuki. The outboard mounts to the stern rail, that worked out well.

Inflating, deflating and storing the dingy in the cockpit is a pain.

Up to now I have been putting the dingy on the swim platform and securing it with rope as designed by Rube and Goldberg. OK for short trips if you go slow.

It looks like the factory option was a Weaver snap system.

For anyone who has the Weaver set up, did that work out to your satisfaction? Is there some other option I should look at?

I am pretty handy, is it something I can self install?

Thank you in advance.

I've got the weaver setup on my R29 with swim platform rails. I use the 4" up/4" out offsets and the standoff bars. The offsets are removable type (highly recommend you get these vice the permanently mounted ones). I have a soft bottom 9'6" soft bottom dink that I can easily pull up by my self.

We purchased a classic R27 last year from Ranger tugs without a dinghy. We already had a zodiac cadet 240 roll up floor and Suzuki 4 hp motor. My husband did it all himself with the advice of Weaver in Rathdrum Idaho (we live in Spokane). This year we purchased a Highfield 260UL at the Seattle boat show. My husband again did all the work himself. Davits were already there and we matched the new dinghy to them. So far it looks awesome! So you can do it yourself.

I too ordered our boat without the Weaver Davits and installed the 4” up 4” out removal mounts. The install was not difficult (hardest part is making sure to measure everything correctly- measure twice drill once kind of thing). We did have the yokes on the dinghy side professionally glued on and glad we did. We run a Takacat dinghy with a 2.5 hp Susuki mounted on the rail. Works great and very happy with the install. If I had it to do over I would not bother with the removal davits as they stay on all the time whether we use the dinghy or not.

Trailering down the road we have alway thrown the dinghy on the bed of the truck as I wasn’t sure how it would travel down the highway. It has been so solid Over the past year even in some rough seas I will probably test leaving it on the davits going down the road with our next outing. If it works it would certainly be more convenient.

Great info guys, thank you. I will definetly get the 4 inch higher mounts.

We have Weaver on our R29S but on the R27 we had a set up from Hurley Davits that we liked a lot. The Hurley worked on the 27 because it did not have rails on the swim platform. The one thing we really liked about the Hurley setup was that the dinghy sat parallel to the water, providing better visibility while underway.

I did not purchase the inflatable from Cutwater so it did not come set up on my boat with the brackets. I ordered all the parts from Weaver for the set up. After doing so I found that Defender or Fishery supply is a much cheaper way to purchase the parts. The install was not bad the most difficult part of the install is proper location of the dingy on the swim platform. There is a hard spray that comes off each side of the boat and will hit the inflatable when cruising at higher speeds. The 4" up 4" out helps with this. The Transom beam is 8' 1" on the C26 and C28 so the 8' 6" inflatable is longer than the beam at the transom. It is best to offset the install so the transom side of the inflatable is even with the hull side (port side) so the spray doesn't hit the tube closest to the swim platform. The bow of the inflatable sweeps up and is higher so it doesn't get hit that much but it will hang past the hull side 5". This has never been an issue for me. The gluing of the pads is not hard to do it just takes patience and follow the directions closely. I have installed many without issue or complaints of coming loose. The key is good prep cleaning, use the glue supplied by weaver (purchased from Defender or Fisheries) after gluing deflate the tubes and work the air bubbles out ( I use a hair dryer to keep the material warm while doing this) Then let it sit for 5 days for the glue to fully cure then inflate. I have all the dimensions of my set up on my C26 which is the same as your C28 if you want them. I also have the full list of parts used. PM me if you want them. Good luck.

I agree with Jim the downside of the weaver setup is the obstructed view aft. I have an extra set of L brackets installed so I can lay the boat down closer to the transom when cruising. I use this set up also when trailering. I do not have platform rails for this reason. The photo showing the starboard side over hang will not be has bad with the 260CM . The Gala 270 is 8'10" so 4" longer than the 260.

Our 2016, R-27 classic, came equipped with an 7'10" Achilles RIB and a 6 HP OB on the Olssen davits which are close to the transom so the boat is tucked in close.
The boat is mounted high above the propane locker horizontally with OB attached about gunwhale level.
Minimal obstructed view astern.
Since the boat is in charter service, we added an small electric winch to make recovery easier for charterers.

I realized I misspelled the mfg. name.
It is Olsson and located in Seattle.
