I was wondering how many different attachment methods and locations folks are using to permanently attach USCG documentation numbers to their R-29 hulls. Perhaps I'll use the starboard stringer accessed through the main engine hatch for a mounting location then use clear fiberglass resin over the numbers to seal them. Any ideas?

Be advised... the regulations say the number must be located "on some clearly visible INTERIOR part of the hull FORWARD OF AMIDSHIPS". (Note my emphasis).

I personally plan to engrave the number on one side of the companionway from the helm to the forward cabin. If done carefully, it should not be unattractive.

That is what we did and I have seen many others done the same way. We have had our boat inspected by the coast guard and it was not a issue. We put ours under the stairs that fold up. Right on the hull with vinal stickers and then glassed right over them with a few coats. The are very visible when you open the hatch.

I used a Dremel tool to engrave them into the stringer that the water pump is mounted on just forward of the motor. I then took a sharpie and "colored" them in.

Thanks for the inputs. This is our first "documented" boat and we want to make sure the numbers are in the correct location. I'll be sure to use the "measure twice, cut once" theory before applying the numbers.
