Help me with my Christmas present, please. Barbara wants us to be fully rigged for salmon fishing this summer in Desolation Sound. We are renting a house with a dock on Cortez Island for a few weeks in August, near prime salmon fishing grounds.

We are already all set for mooching, but need advice on where to locate the downrigger mount on our R-27. The railings and the Bimini tubing clearly get in the way. I am looking at either a railing mount or a stanchion mount (Scotty), and was wondering if other Tugnuts have used these. I like the ability to remove the mount and the fact that you can swing the downrigger into the cockpit without running into the railing.

ps. My other present is a crab pot. Preferably something that stows well. Recommendations there would be welcome too!

Our 27 was rigged with Scotty's when purchased. Andrew used the boat in Desolation the year before with them all set up for fishing. Our boat also is set-up for trolling.

We're quite partial to the round Ladner SS crab pots with a zinc built in. They're not collapsable, but they work really well and don't rust. Super easy to bait and unload, and buoy and line stow inside. We carry two on the cabin roof. Often caught more crab than we could use with these - way better than other types we've tried.

The rails on my R-27 lift out. Making room for your downriggers to be used.
