It is 23:30 on Friday evening when we arrive at Destiny. She is all snug and secure in her slip at Shilshole. Not a breeze is stirring, stars shine brightly overhead. We slip inside and fire up the heat. With no cloud cover, the temperatures have dipped into the 30’s.
Along with the heater, I fire up the electric mattress pad to warm our spacious berth. What a great investment this has been! By the time we are ready to climb into bed, it is nice and cozy and warm.
Saturday morning we wake to overcast skies and blustery winds. What a difference a few hours can make. I shot Marcus and Jorge a text to verify they are still wanting to head out for the night. It is agreed. We will hang on the city dock in Eagle Harbor for the night.
Its 9:00, we slip our dock lines and make our way out of the marina. Once clear of Shilshole’s protective breakwaters, we immediately encounter three to five foot seas. We glide up and over the chop as we cross the sound to Eagle Harbor. Spray coats the windscreen. Water spraying, clouds racing overhead, dark stormy waters of Puget Sound stirred into frenzy by the gusty winds, what a glorious cruise it is!
We round the corner and make our way into Eagle Harbor. We have a ferry not far astern. I contact him on channel 13 letting him know we are aware of his presence, as well as our intentions to hug the port side of the channel. This gives the great ship plenty of space to operate within the confines of the channel. They thank us for advising them of our intentions.
An amazing site greets us as we approach the city dock in Eagle Harbor. Not another boat is secured to the dock. We have our choice of where we want to tie for the night.
Once we are secure, we head into town. Winslow is a great little walking town with a number of great shops and restaurants. The town faced a difficult time three years ago when the town fathers decided Main Street needed sprucing up. The turmoil drove a number of businesses out. Today however, the town is once again thriving! Winslow is a great location to provision with the Town and Country Market only three blocks from the city dock.
Maureen heads to the Yarn Shop to pick up a few supplies for projects she is working on. I stay out on the street watching the world pass by. It is not long and Marcus calls to let us know they are approaching the harbor entrance. We make our way back to Destiny. Hayden Bay makes her way around the bend and heads toward the City Dock.
Once Hayden Bay is secure, we make the short walk back into town. It is late afternoon and we have yet to have lunch. We decide to take in a late lunch/early dinner at Marche’s. This is a fabulous little restaurant off the beaten path. The food is superb and only topped by the great service. I would strongly recommend anyone visiting Winslow to make a reservation and dine at Marche’.
For desert though, we chose to make our way over to Mora Ice Cream for one of their fantastic Hot Fudge Sundaes! Once all is consumed we start back toward the city dock. However, we make one small detour into the Eleven Winery for a wine tasting. What more could we ask for? A great lunch/dinner, hot fudge sundae for desert, and topped off with a wine tasting?
After our “tasting” we make our way to the “Town and Country Market”. We are stopped in our tracks by a beautiful double rainbow overhead. What a day it has truly been!
Once back aboard, we all move to Destiny’s pilothouse table where we enjoy a great game of “Apples to Apples”. We are glad that no other boats had decided to join us on the city dock as the laughter continues late into the night. At one point, Jorge remarks “Destiny is always filled with laughter”. It is now late and time to head off to bed. Jorge and Marcus retire to Hayden Bay. Maureen and I snuggle in our warm berth.
We wake on Sunday morning to another beautiful PNW day. Blue skies overhead, a light breeze ripples the waters surface. We enjoy a cup of coffee in Destiny’s pilothouse with Jorge and Marcus but alas it is time to head back to Shilshole. For Maureen is to fly off to New Mexico and I to California. Our trip across the sound is uneventful. Smooth waters, blue skies, and the company of each other, in the place that we love most.
We secure Destiny and prepare her for next weeks adventure to Poulsbo. Then it is off to the airport. Another incredible winter weekend cruise has come and gone.
What a great life we live!
