Has anyone used an electric trailer winch? The reviews on electric winches are pretty bad.

When I bought my 2008 R25 the trailer came with an electric winch. I used it once, got so frustrated with it (extremely slow - you could grow old using it, not powerful enough) that I took it off and went with a manual. If you like I can dig out the specifics on models. I would like eventually to come up with a dual setup, 1 electric and 1 manual. For the electric I am contemplating a winch made for an off road vehicle with plenty of power. I want to do more research and find someone who may have a similar setup

I ordered my new trailer with an electric winch. Used it maybe three times.
Plenty of power - in fact it will make the birds nest from hell if you let it and using my hand to control the lay of the cable while the motor is winding it, is not an option.
Decided hand cranking is better and it has been unplugged since then.
No birds nests either

When my trailer was stolen in 2013, I had a new trailer built and had a Powerwinch RC30 installed as part of the set up.

My wife has lived with MS since 1985 so I have always single handed our boats including our R25. Manual winches have not been a problem for me although I did have a strap break when loading my R25 onto a borrowed trailer after mine was stolen.

I am very happy with the Powerwinch. It has a keyfob remote. I run the boat up on the trailer at the ramp part way, then walk out on the trailer and attach the winch cable to the bow eye. Then step up on the dock and use the remote to winch the trailer up. i pull the boat up the ramp to a level spot and hit the brakes hard to slide it forward in case it is sitting back some and then winch it tight.

It has worked as advertised and I would definitely opt to install it again.

Here's what it looks like mounted.

My boat is always in fresh water so I don't know if that makes a difference but I'm very happy with the RC30.

Hello Jeff,

Does your electric winch receive its power through the normal plug to the tow vehicle?

DOes the winch have a provision to manually crank if no power or malfunction of some kind?

Thanks,

dave

The winch gets its power from a battery mounted in a box that sits on the trailer frame. It's charged through the wiring coming through the the trailer connector on the truck. There is a manual crank should the winch power fail.
