Electrical overheating

Hello all Tug nuts,
We now own a beautiful 2010 Ranger Tug 29 and love it. Our confusion is with the electrical panel and how to set the switches when under way. After we disconnected from shore power (got under way), we turned the main switch to off, the AC main was on, the battery charger was on, the inverter was on, and battery switch was on house batteries. The Xantrex inverter showed red lights in the ACIN, Fault, and Temp. Warning. We smelled an electrical overheating smell when we docked.
This is so new to us we are asking for any help in understanding this panel and how to set it. Is the ACMain to be left on only when we are hooked up to shore power?

Not exactly sure of the electrical layout in the R29 but I can't think of a reason to have the battery charger turned on when not on shore power. The battery charger should only be used from AC shore power. While underway your batteries are charged from the engne alternator. If the inverter was on and providing power to the AC panel while the battery charger was on you have the battery essentially trying to charge itself via the inverter. I can imagine the inverter going south pretty quickly in this situation. On our boat we would have to switch the the AC panel over to the inverter for this to happen. Not sure on the R29.

On our 31, very similar to 29 we do the following when leaving dock.
We have a true power combo inverter charger. It does one or the other, never both
If you have separate do not try to invert and charge at the same time.

1 Turn inverter /charger off center
2 Switch AC switch below meter & breakers off.
3 shut off shore power breaker(s)
4 disconnect shore power cord and stow.
5 if needed for air conditioning start generator.
6 switch to generator
7 turn charger on to provide AC - up
8 if no generator leave transfer switch off
9 turn inverter on - down.
