Saw the following comment on an old message "If you have Yanmar engine make sure Kenny instructs you on how to engage neutral properly" . Is there a trick? Sometimes I think I'm in neutral, but am actually still in gear.

I used white tape to make two arrows, one on the shift lever and one on the base. When the arrows line up, I know it's in neutral.

Are you wanting to stay in neutral while changing RPMs?
We have an R25sc with the Yanmar 4BY2 engine so our controls may be different. During our training day I believe we were told:
- press in the black button at the side of the shifter where it pivots, then hold it in while running the shifter forward. This let's you increase the RPMs without engaging forward gear.
Only had the boat out once and haven't played with that yet, so I hope I'm remembering that correctly.
Not sure if that helps you.

While holding the button in move the handle to reverse position to increase RPM while in neutral.
