Does it require any special brand when you flush and replace coolant?

Hi Mark,

Yanmar and several other marine diesel manufacturers recommend using Texaco/Havoline Long Life Antifreeze. There are other producers of long life antifreeze but it seems that the Texaco/Havoline product is trusted most by the engine manufacturers. The long life antifreeze has additional additives and corrosion inhibitors that can stand up to the rigors of a marine diesel cooling system. These additives are also intended to provide extended service of the coolant (especially in automotive applications), although, it is still highly recommended that the coolant be changed annually in a marine diesel application. I plan on changing mine at the end of each boating season as I did for the first time last year, as part of the winterizing process. This product is available from Texaco/Havoline in a premixed, ready to pour solution, or in a standard concentrate that needs to be diluted to a 50/50 mix with water. I have only managed to find the concentrate in my area and therefore cut it with distilled water as recommended. Changing the coolant annually is cheap insurance as far as I am concerned.

By the way, what did you discover, if anything, in regards to your failure to start/run issue and the mystery of the empty coolant overflow bottle?

On page 31 of my manual it says :

Engine Coolant Specifications

Texaco Long Life Coolant (LLC), both
standard and premixed, product code
7997 and 7998

• Havoline Extended Life
Antifreeze / Coolant, product code 7994

Note: In the U.S., LLC is required for
the warranty to be valid.

Since I got my boat, Yanmar has come out with their own long life antifreeze. It looks like you can now have a choice.
