Engine hours

Curious....does the engine hour meter vary by engine rpm or is it true "clock time"? In aircraft, the tach hour meter varies with engine rpm...which is why aircraft often have a Hobbs meter than measures true clock time when the master switch is on.

On which type engine? On the Cummins it is simply clock time and runs when the key is turned on whether engine is running or not. I've never seen any system on a boat that functions as you describe. The only differences I've seen is that some only count when engine is actually running. But most of them clock time whenever the key is on with or without engine rpm.

The timers on our Yanmar powered RTs seem to be Hobbs meter equivalents. Not sure about the Volvos though....
