Hello Ranger Tug owners. My 2014 21-EC has been performing flawlessly. Until today. Went down to our boat this afternoon to perform some season ending maintenance and cannot seem to get the Tach/engine start to power up. Not sure if I took a lightning strike while away or what may have happened. I am showing 12.8V with my Fluke tester on both house and start batteries. I am leaning towards the Engine interface. The 15A fuse associated with that module is good. There are zero marine dealer/mechanics in my immediate area so I am on my own to get her running. Any ideas would be welcome.

I take itv the engine is not turning over, right? Have you checked the fwd located red/white rotary switch in the cabinet below the throttle? I had this issue on my previous R21 EC and had forgotten I had turned that rotary switch OFF when leaving the boat some months earlier.

Yes. I have turned on the mater breaker in the engine box and also the breaker under the helm seat. I push the on/off button that powers up the tach and nothing happens. More trouble shooting today when my wife gets home from work.

I hate to state the obvious and I don’t know what you engine interface is like but our 2014 Volvo includes a fob that can be used to lock the ignition. If you have similar it could have been accidentally locked.

Ray, I'm not familiar with the Volvo motor, however you should be able to override the electrical system and start the engine as long as you have power to the starter and solenoid for fuel. Both of witch can be jumped to run the engine. Then its just like starting a car with the solenoid and a screw driver. A lot of us have installed a emergency start button / system when the safety switch on throttle control or other electrical safety systems seem to go haywire at the most inconvenient time.
I would look in the Volvo manual for electoral system to narrow your problem if you don't have a manual it will be on the internet.
Good luck. Bob

Bob, I'll try and find the video I watched this morning and point out what is happening/not happening in my instance.

@:07 he pushes the on/off button to send power to the tach. Mine will not power up the tach at this point. Hope this clears up a few things for people attempting to help. Thanks.

Ray, from the video it looks like a relay/delay for the glow plugs but why it's not working, I have no clue wish I could help. You might try www.justanswer.com
I have never used them so let us know if they actually help.

Today, Sunday one day after not being able to start my tug. I Got Her Running! I will attempt to attach a photo of the faulty part. No where on this electronics part is the port of manufacture listed. Probably not Sweden. Just a guess.
gallery2.php?g2_itemId=70214 I guess it's been two years already since Volvo Penta offered to replace engines to owners with the D1-30F series. Lucky for me, Andy Sweet my Volvo Rep, allowed me to gut a large supply of parts off my original motor. This module was one of the parts I kept. I looked up the price and it's not listed but the harness is about $308 just for the wiring. The fused relay/module price says call the dealership. I will more than likely be ordering a new one because today's electronic parts are not that stellar. In my humble opinion. It was not difficult to swap out as most, except 3 connections, are plug and play. I'll do a follow up once I know the price of a new module/relay.

There was a recall by VP on a module attached to the engine that sounds like the part you’re describing. My new replacement engine, installed about a year ago, didn’t even have the upgrade, and they sent me one for free. It might be worth contacting them before you buy one.

Thanks so much. I will. Yeah this one smells burnt.

Just found this: MDI_BOX_RECALL.pdf
I have not received any service bulletins from Volvo Penta but it sure sounds like these boxes are junk.

Baz, one other thing I re-affirmed on my boat is, I do not have to have the master breaker (engine box) or the battery disconnect under the helm seat on in order to power up the Volvo tach. Just push on and start engine if the MDI is functioning properly.
