Subject: Engine Oil for 2016 R-21EC Volvo Penta D1-30

I plan on using this. From the engine manual this appears to meet the recommended oil specs. It should be enough as the manual states the D1-30 require 3.5 litres (approx) including filter.

The Valvoline diesel oil is probably a fine oil.
It’s also probable less expensive than the Volvo
recommended oil. For my piece of mind and until
the warranty expires on my 2014 21EC with the same
engine you have, I’ll be using the Volvo oil and filter.

My Volvo engine manual does not specify a brand of oil to use. It simply states what the specifications are for the oil to be used.

AMEN Barry! That's how you decide what kind of oil goes in your engine!

Armed with that information, owners are free to EXCEED the standards at their discretion.

I believe a Volvo Penta dealer said Valvoline was the diesel oil that Volvo private labels.

I've owned Volvo autos for over 40 years and my local Volvo dealership has used several oil brands over the years. Today they use Castrol oil for all their Volvo servicing. Since they maintain many Volvos under Volvo's warranty I suspect the oil they use is AOK with Volvo in Sweden. Yes, I know Volvo auto engines aren't same as Volvo Penta marine engines and that Volvo Penta is quite likely a different arm of Volvo just as the Volvo trucking is, but using a decent oil brand of the correct specifications will IMO not void warranty.

The 'trick' is to change oil/filter at regular and frequent intervals to keep the engine 'ticking over' nicely. My Volvo odometers easily reach 250,000 miles without major servicing being required.

Baz,
Nice to hear about your good luck with Volvos cars and what kind of oil your dealer uses in you automobile. I had a first oil change and check out done on our boat by a Volvo Penta dealer and they used Volvo's oil in Volvo containers. I think my post was referring to Volvo's private labeled oil being advised that it was really Valvoline. I'm not sure of what that had to do with what happens at your Volvo car dealer. :?
