Engine shut down

What boat and engine? Make sure pulleys are still aligned and turn easy and bearings are good. If D4-300 Volvo, get belt path diagram off web. Use 3/8 torque wrench to Volvo torque spec. A 1/2 inch torque wrench is too big for tight area. There is no self-tensioner. You can't see much of belt so that makes it scary. It really isn't bad after you figure it out. You need to stick your head and hands in tight space. I always thought self tensioner was great advantage of serpentine belts, not for D4-300.

Which belt came off? There are three. One v-belt for the raw water pump, a longer v-belt for the alternator and coolant pump, and a toothed timing belt which is hidden behind the serpentine belt and a plastic cover. If you lost the timing belt your engine is likely toast. The other two are simple to change as there are tensioner pulleys on both that you can reduce tension with a wrench.

Whew! That’s really good news! The two shredded belts should be easy to replace. Hopefully the engine temperature didn’t get too high before shut down.
