I have a 150 hp Cummins mercury smart start engine and to start it up over an winter storage the engine will not start/ turn over. It has the code Smart Start Abort. What is the process of starting this engine? Batteries are showing 12 volt, the screen is functioning with displays. Thans for any help

We have an R25... with the Cummins 150 and smart tech. Our engine has always stared, even after winter storage. What we would check first includes:
If the engine is not turning over, is your engine battery charged enough to turn over the engine?
Is your engine switch turned on (on the port side of your cabin step) for an extra boost at start, turn on all three switches. Then turn off the lower switch while underway).
We've never seen the abort message.

Let us know what you find out... Don

If the battery is 12.0 volts, it is discharged...
Lots of discussions on this in the past so I won't bore the list with a blow by blow repeat... Here is a quick chart..

Open Circuit Voltage (12 V) Open Circuit Voltage (6 V) Approximate charge Relative acid density
12.65 V 6.32 V 100% 1.265 g/cm3
12.45 V 6.22 V 75% 1.225 g/cm3
12.24 V 6.12 V 50% 1.190 g/cm3
12.06 V 6.03 V 25% 1.155 g/cm3
11.89 V 6.00 V 0% 1.120 g/cm3

Put a charger on the start battery (at least) over night and likely it will CRANK - starting is another issue entirely...
If you can't get a charger on it, then you need to bring a fully charged battery to replace the start battery...

I had a similiar experience on a boat we sold last fall that had a Cummins engine. I tried everything mentioned in this tread only to find out that I had not reconnected one of the battery cables. You're probably way ahead of me on this but before you spend any money, as I was about to do, it's worth checking the cables one more time.
