I pulled one of my zincs out and there's just a small amount of zinc in the brass plug that won't allow me to fully screw in a replacement zinc into the plug. Any hints on how to remove the remaining zinc (other than re-installing in the engine a checking it in a few week).

Thanks,

I have used a smaller drill bit without destroying the threads and then collapsed the sides using a fine pick. Similar to a dentist tool.

Yeah that's annoying. I'd try what knotflying said. My solution was to order extra brass plugs from boatzincs.com. Now have a couple of extras laying around.

Thanks guys... I figured I'd need to do some drilling...

UPDATE: I decided to put my 4 semesters of chemistry to use... I mixed a solution of vinegar and salt in a small paper cup and put the brass plug with the remaining zinc (after drilling out as much as I could) in the solution. It will take overnight but I should wake up to a nice clean brass plug, plus a little extra hydrogen gas in the atmosphere 😀 You can see in the picture below the hydrogen gas rising to surface from inside the plug.

After you are done you can make salad dressing. Just add a little olive oil! The zinc will help protect against Covid and colds also.
