When I fuel up at my home marina , Fishermen's Villiage in Punta Gorda, the diesel fuel nozzle does not fit inside the intake on my 2010 R25. Fueling with a funnel takes forever and requires a bit of work. Has anyone replaced this intake with one of a larger diameter?

A chain is as strong as the weakest link. You will need a larger fill hose as well, along with a larger fitting to the tank. If you are only concerned about nozzle size rather than backup. I would make up a PVC fitting that will screw into the fill. You will have to remove the retention chain though. You may also need a to do two 45 degree elbows to move it out past the rail.

We have (had) the same problem. We got a "Clean Way Fuel Fill" device, and it works great. Google it. BTW, I have no connection to this product and no financial interest in it.

Now I need something to keep fuel from bubbling out the vent....

for me its the bubble out the fuel vent thats the problem!

we have the same problem on our R31.
clean way looks good

Make sure there are no sags in the vent line to the tank. We had the same overflow problem and found a sag that held fuel. After removing about a foot of hose to make it straighter it helped. Not 100% but as long as I fill slowly I don't get as much overflow out the vent.

I have found that my fill up issues are minimal with an automotive type fill up nozzle (smaller diameter) and are aggravated with the commercial style. To me this means there are not internal problems with the hoses. The fuel fill-up system is just not designed to work with the larger diameter (unfortunately more common) commercial type fill up nozzles. Always a lot of grief and worry at fill-up. Takes forever to really top it off and worry about leaks through vent. Yes I know about the various vent adaptors, traps etc.

I've never had a problem with fuel bubbling out the vent. It bubbles out of the filler if the fuel dude doesn't slow down in time. So, why does fuel appear at the vent and (perhaps) not at the filler pipe ? Am I missing something here ?

I think if there is a sag in the vent line fuel gets in at the low point. Then on subsequent fills as the fuel is being filled the air coming up the vent line has strong enough pressure to push that fuel up and then out the vent.

There are diesel fuel nozzle adaptors that can be had for about $10 that will address the fillerneck mismatches....
I think this is what you're after:

Thanks for posting this, I just ordered one. Looks like a great item to have onboard when traveling and marina's only have the large diameter nozzles. Those pump at a higher rate and care will still be needed to slow the flow rate. I did come across one marina that could reduce the pressure at the pump which was nice.

Of course you could get a larger boat that fits the nozzle 🙂

After the first spill, I made an adapter - starting at the fill, I have a 1 1/4 thread to smooth PVC coupling into a 1 1/2 smooth PVC coupling, two pieces of 1 1/2 PVC pipe and a 45 degree elbow. A large high speed pump fits in with no hands and pumps at full speed.

The vent is fitted with a whistle to indicate near full. Ove every few fills 1 or 2 drops comes out the vent, but otherwise, just air and whistle.

No problems. Under $10 and takes no hands in use.

I also had (have) many problems with filling and fuel bubbling out the vent while filling. Many/most of the marinas have the larger nozzle which do not fit the filler neck. I purchased two of the VW/Audi diesel filler adapters, (one for backup). I made a fuel collector that covers the vent. A picture of the collector is on my album page 4. I have also had the filler nozzle break the chain that retains the cap - resulting in a cold swim in lake Michigan. So be careful when filling that you don't break the chain! Overall - filling the diesel tank is a big pain in the #%$*. Fortunately all the marina fuel guys have been patient while I hook up the vent collector.

I've used the vent line filter on a few boats - it stops the few drops that might be carried into the vent line, but does nothing to tell you when the fuel tank is full.

One of my minor gripes with my R-25 is the lack of a fuel gauge. The flow meter seems very accurate, but doesn't tell me how the filling process is progressing. With a large fuel tank and an unknown speed fuel fill, this results in either frequent checking of the fuel dispensing pump o shore by a second person - or luck in shutting the fuel flow off at the exact moment.

The previous owner of Shearwater, a man who has judgement I respect more each day, installed a fuel whistle,

an interesting device that whistles, very loudly, when fueling and stops when the tank is near (1/2 gallon or so) full. I've never had a fuel spill since owning this boat. Not real expensive, easy to install, and works well.

VW adaptor arrived today. Looks like it will work fine.
