Happy 4th and safe cruising. My wife and I are going to trailer our R23 from RI to Waterford, NY to launch on the Mohawk River to head at least as far as Syracuse, then decide whether to Co tinue for triangle loop, or sightsee back to origin. We need to store Jeep Grand Cherokee and our 36' tandem trailer for up to 3-4 weeks. Not having much luck finding facility so far. Want to leave by mid-July. Can anyone help point us in the right direction?

Thanks Much,

Hi Toot!

Most of the Triangle Loop (Oswego canal, Lake Ontario, Rideau, Montreal, St L to Sorel, Richelieu, Lake Champlain, Chambly canal to Hudson back into the Erie Canal) is in Canada, which remains closed to tourist travel until at least July 21. We cruised the 800-1,000 mile Triangle Loop in 2019, launching at Pirates Cove Marina, Erie mile 158 near Clay, NY. It was a trip of a lifetime! The marina has a ramp (though not level), rig storage, transient slips with power, a small pool and local flavor bar and grill. Call owners Paul or Patti White, 315 695 3901. We launched and parked the rig there 3 days ago, to cruise the Western Erie canal and Finger Lakes over 4-6 weeks one-way (Amtrak back from Buffalo to Syracuse and Lyft back to Pirates Cove marina).

The eastern Erie canal has no real challenges except lots of small locks, and the only big water (which Eileen defines as ‘when I can’t see any land anywhere’) is Lake Oneida. We had to wait out one day for it to calm down. The river is often lined by summer homes (‘cottages’). It’s under 160 miles from from Waterford to Pirates Cove, which is the nearest marina to Three Rivers Junction, where you can head north on the Oswego canal to cross Lake Ontario. You could then explore the US side of the Thousand Islands. Designate every third day as an ‘option’ or weather day. A schedule is the most dangerous thing on the boat.

When you do cruise the Triangle loop, get your air draft down to eight feet so you can enter the Lachine Canal through Montreal. The only other option is the Seaway locks, where giant ships have priority. We had to remove the radar dome (4 bolts and 2 cables). The rapids around Montreal are not navigable. Because the St Lawrence river has a significant current, Loopers do it clockwise.

NY and Vermont state law requires physically removing the sewage plumbing between your overboard blackwater discharge (if you have one) and the macerator pump in all of Lake Champlain and the Chambly canal system. You’ll likely need a hair dryer/heat to remove it, and you’ll need a new hose to replace it.

Bottom line, if you have 3-4 weeks, we’d advise starting at Pirate’s cove and doing the western Erie Canal rather than eastern. If you choose to also go north and cross Lake Ontario twice, give yourselves 2-3 weather days for each crossing. I wouldn’t count on Canada opening up on the 21st.

Best of luck, and hope this is helpful.

If you want to start in the middle or need a basecamp for stopping I highly recommend Pirates' Cove marina in Clay. I have been there twice and have left my truck and trailer there while I did the canal with my R-21. They are super friendly and nice spot. You may want to consider starting there - you can go either way east or west from there. Cant say enough about the place - good little restaurant and nice marina for the night too. PM me if you have any questions about the canal!

Second that for Pirates Cove. Great place... Stored our truck and trailer there for 6 weeks. Fantastic people. If you've never done the canal and decide to leave your truck and trailer at Pirates Cove, I recommend heading west from there... better towns and more scenic.

Wow. Thank you all fir the advice, recommendations and tips. Your time to write to us is greatly appreciated. We will let you know what our final plans will be. Safe and Happy Cruising to you all!!!!!

Hi all,

So thanks to you responders our trip is taking shape. Put in and car/trailer storage at Albany Matine Services Marina in Cohoes, Ny. Then westbound in Mohawk/Erie to Sylvan Beach at east end of Oneida Lake. That is about 130 mi from Waterford-Cohoes. Then back to origin. We have about 10 days this trip. Since you have made tge trek, do you think we can do this route from July 18-24. The 260 rt miles divided by avg 8 kn= 32.5 cruising hours. Divided by 7-8 days thats about 5 hours/day of cruising. Does this sound reasonable. I was told to figure about 90 min per lock, so about 6-8 hrs/day on the go. Sound about right?

Again, thanks for all the help and advice!!

90 minutes per lock seems a bit long to me. I don't ever remember being at a lock more that an hour.

To all of you who were kind enough to respond to our inquiries on the Erie Canal.
We just returned from 10 glorious days (didn’t have more time) on the canals.
Recommendations were excellent.with E2 to E19 closed due to high water and current, we drove west and put in at Pirates Cove in Clay. NY. Paul and Pattie were perfect hosts, warm and helpful. Launch ramp below water in process of being re-leveled due to travel lift launches of large boats and large engine ground torque. With a little help, no problem launch or haul our R23. As have others, recommend launch and tow vehicle-trailer storage there. Thanks for this recommendation.
With E24 (Baldwinsville) we headed west and went to Phoenix on the Oswego canal (lock north of there toward Lake Ontario also closed). We then headed west on Oswego toward Lake Onandaga near Syracuse. Graduated there in ‘74 with Masters and had never been back. Mind blowing growth, especially of Medical complex and Newhouse School (my alma mater). Then we headed on The Seneca River to the Cayuga- Seneca canal and it’s 4 locks to enter Cayuga Lake and then Seneca Lake. Beautiful and pristine. NYS knows how to manage its natural resources and environs. We spent about 5 nights in this area and enjoyed the serenity.
The the long trek back to Pirates Cove in Clay, NY to haul and head back home to Bristol, RI. We love being able to transport our R23 so easily from Salt to Fresh and back. Toot Suite is like our pet and tows perfectly behind our V8 Jeep Grand Cherokee. (Electric over hydraulic brakes on the tandem make the difference and vastly enhance the safety margins). Up to each owner , however.
So we did about 180-200 miles and felt like we were in a Disney Theme Park ride, abounding beauty.
So thanks to all of you who helped and advised us. We are grateful.
Happy Cruising into the latter Summer and Fall
