Exhaust Elbow?

My problems from earlier this summer motivated me to thoroughly check my engine (Volvo D4-260) for any kind of corrosion. The good news I didn't find any. Even the motor mounts look pretty good.

The one concern I have is the exhaust elbow, which is part of the wet exhaust and turbo charger system. I seem to have the original cast iron version. I do see some corrosion around the band clamps. I have no idea on how to check this further or how to know when I might need to replace it. I have noticed that available replacement parts are stainless steel, which may be a hint.

Anyone have any experience with this? My boat is a 2013 model.

Thanks,

I didn't see any response to this. Maybe that's a good thing. Just to make sure folks can reference what I'm asking about, here's a picture of the exhaust or mixing elbow on the Volvo D4-260.

I'm not sure how to check it, but if no one else is having a problem, hopefully I'm not either.

If anyone has experience with checking this, please let me know.

The easiest way to inspect it is remove it. The cast iron elbow will build up a scale of rust over time. This can cause a blockage causing a water flow restriction and elevated engine operating temperatures. It can also cause less water flow to the exhaust causing the exhaust hoses to operate above deigned temperatures. The photos you posted do not show an elbow in bad condition but it is hard to say what it looks like on the inside. The removal of the elbow is not that hard. Remove the V band clamp,( connection between the Turbo and elbow), Raw water discharge hose and exhaust hose and the elbow is off for inspection. When the elbow is off fully inspect its condition for rust , blockage and over all visible condition. This is a good time to inspect the turbine side of the turbo. Clean the impeller if needed and inspect the condition.

Thanks Brian, this was a big help. Doesn't sound like I need a special sealant or tool to re-install. I may make this a project for winter lay over.
