I had a mechanic come out to the boat last week to help me with some maintenance. After he finished the work I had asked for he gave the boat the once over (which I really appreciate) and he noticed this hose:

He pointed out the metal starting to show (just under my number plate). That hose is about 9 years old. I asked him to order a new one for me. I try to look everything over myself, but I missed this. Sometimes it's good to have a fresh set of eyes. People might say " oh he's just looking for work". These guys are up to their armpits in work, they don't need any more. Once it was pointed out to me, the hose was obviously bad.

Just thought I'd share in case it helps someone else.

He's not looking for work he is doing normal inspections. Hoses and hoses clamps should be inspected yearly. If there is evidence of damage, wear or deterioration then it is better to replace it before it fails. 10 year is about the time hoses start to show age. It doesn't mean they are ready to fail but each hose and clamp should be inspected and replaced if there is evidence of an issue. I just replaced all the raw water hoses on my 2002 Mainship pilot. I inspected all of them and they looked good. I did see some deterioration on the turbo to after cooler hose. I had this hose fail on my D3 220 Volvo (Cutwater) When I removed the hose it showed its longevity to be short. I then decided to replace all the hoses and hose clamps on the raw water cooling side. ( This boat has alway been in fresh water) To my surprise a few of the hoses had Interior deterioration. None of them were ready to fail but the hoses were ready to be replaced in my opinion. I did find 3 hoses clamps that had failed. Hoses and belts are always overlooked. Most are inexpensive and easy to replace. If they fail you will be dead in the water. Your mechanic was not looking for work he was saving himself work. Had that hose failed you would have had an extremely hot exhaust elbow. and possibly damaged the large exhaust hose. not to mention a lot of salt water getting sprayed in the engine room.
