Hi everyone - I have a 2012 29' Classic Tug with the Yanmar engine and it has been a great engine with no issues. Currently it has 1410 hours on it. We keep it in the ocean year round (British Columbia) and use it year round. We service the engine and transmission every spring. Since this is now coming up a 10 year old engine are there certain raw water components I should be thinking about proactively changing? Feel free to educate me on what components I should be looking at. And if anyone has any experience on how many hours they are getting on their Yanmar's operating in salt water prior to any issues. Thanks very much.

I have an R27 2011 with 2500 hours and changed out all my hoses and riser about 5 years ago on the advice of mechanics. Rubber hoses have a limited life and I sought to forestall any issues because I do a lot of cruising far away from engine shops. But even back then the shop had trouble finding some of the hoses, in fact one hose was not available. Get the hoses before starting the job. I had the engine pulled and was able the service the whole engine compartment and clean it up. At the same time I also changed out the motor mounts because of sever rust caused by the location of a scupper holes. Make sure the mounts are painted before installation!. Injectors were serviced and rebuilt at 2000 hours. Also a good time to change out all the belts and impellor.

I would go along with Alice J's recommendation. How is your water temperature when WOT. Have you had the heat exchanger serviced? In the 11 years I owned mine I did a flush with RydLime three times. Gansett Ranger (an R-27) had his exchanger removed and serviced in a bath with gaskets replaced as well as the transmission hoses. My opinion is, if you plan on keeping the boat, definitely pull the engine out and have all hoses replaced, clean engine compartment, mounts replaced. dripless stuffing box, injector service, exchanger service. You may be talking about and expense of around 10k.

If you go the route of pulling the engine as recommended it’s a good time to access parts that are difficult to reach. Replace the gaskets on the oil pan drain plugs. Inspect the oil pan for corrosion. Fully drain and replace engine coolant. Change raw water impeller, inspect/ replace belts. The mixing elbow may also need to be replaced as well as the exhaust hose.
As Knotflying stated you are probably in the 10k range depending on labor costs.
