I just ordered a R-27 a few days ago. I am excited to use it next spring and in the meantime I am looking into getting a dinghy. I cant find any information on the dinghy lifts capacity. What is the weight limit on the lift for a dinghy? Also what is the weight capacity on the side step of the lift?

This is my first post here at Tugnuts so I hope I'm doing it right.
I too have just ordered the dinghy lift and when pricing the factory-installed options, I noticed (or better guessed) that it could be bought three ways. First, just the lift would be factory installed with the swim platform step/extension. Second option is the lift, step/extension, and a RIB 260 dinghy that apparently is a West Marine inflatable with an aluminum V bottom. The third option is the above, turn-key so to speak, with a motor and motor bracket for when the dinghy is stowed on the lift.

As I indicated in my answer, all of the above is from looking at the pricing and the pictures on the factory website. My question for those more knowledgeable, is since the lift turns the dinghy upsidedown when lifted over the motor, what keeps the seat or the V bottom from falling out?

I went to the West Marine website and didn't find anything about the security of the V bottom and seats... or the oars, too, come to think of it. I hope you didn't have to remove the V everytime you put the dinghy aboard?

We have a new 2020 R-27 OB with the dinghy lift and the factory supplied dinghy. We are very glad that we bought the dinghy as it comes with various side fittings which are essential for it to snap onto the lift. It would have taken quite a bit of work to affix something workable onto another inflatatble.
I don't know the weight capacities but the side step is quite sturdy. I weigh 175 lbs and standing on this little platform is not an issue.
When the dinghy is on the lift, we remove the oars as we are concerned that they might slap around at 35 knots. The seat and the dinghy bottom do not have to be removed and seem very stable.
Hope this helps.

V bottoms on a inflatable RIB are attached to the tubes very securely. i do not know every brand but they usually have C channels to attach the tubes to them so no threat of the V bottom falling out. as for the seat its brand dependent. if it is removable its not a bit deal to take it out every time and some dont even have a seat. I am looking at Highfield RIBs and their seat would be one i would need to remove. i just wanted to know if the lift could handle the 150lbs of the dinghy. As for the attachment points according to my dealer they can be put on most inflatables.

I wanted to bump this thread as i still haven't gotten a weight capacity for the lift on the R-27. MY dealer has not heard back on the number so I cant get it from him at the moment. I am looking to order a RIB soon and want to make sure the one I do will fall within the weight capabilities of the lift. can the lift handle a 250-350lbs rib or do i need to go ultralight at something like 100lbs?

knowing the weight now will allow me to special order a rib if needed so i can have it when my boat is delivered in spring. Thank you

If, and it’s a big if, the factory is using the Highfield 260 aluminum RIB dinghy for the lift on the R-27OB then the two models Highfield sells are:
UL 260 HYP at 70 pounds
CL 260 HYP at 119 pounds

The West Marine RIB-260 mentioned also weights in at 115 pounds.

Certainly nothing like a 350 pound dinghy!

That certainly does seem to be close to what they use in their demonstration video but does not mean that that is all it is capable of. Which is why i put this in ask the factory section because i would think they would have the specifications.

Hello,

We have not factored in a weight limit or specs on size of the dinghy. We use one that weighs less than 120lbs so I would try and stick to a similar size if you want to add your own. As others mentioned, our dinghies come with all of the mounting hardware. If you plan to install your own, be prepared for a lot of glue on parts that will need to be matched up correctly in order for it to work.

As for the step, I have seen 200lb people walk on this without any issues. I would limit it to 250 lbs.

Thank you,

Thank you for the information it helps alot. I understand there are parts that need to be added to a RIB for the lift but was told it wouldn't be an issue. I didn't want to go with the ranger Rib simply because there's no information about it that i could find and wanted to go with a 290 instead of a 260.

I am also interested in buying a folding transom dinghy to save my back by moving the outboard on and off and instead leaving it on the RIB when it is inverted.

Here is a video of the Highfield folding transom if anyone wants to know what i am talking about. it is available on any side on their classic line.
