Hello to everyone I am a new Ranger tug R-23 owner , and wanted to find out if an R-23 can be registered federally. I plan on using the boat all over and in coastal water in my home state of Maine. It seems like it does not meet the tonnage requirements but I have seen other boats that seem to not meet the tonnage requirements any help would be appreciated

If you are referring to Coast Guard Documented, yes.

I have a C28 that has a listed dry weight of 8000 lbs. and it is Documented.

Yes I am asking about the Coast Guard documentation. I am very new at this so called it Federal registration. My concern was that the R23 did not meet the size requirements such as length and weight. I would like to know if anyone fans done this with an R-23

I'm planning to do the same for my R23, and I did some research to verify that the R23 is large enough to register. Them minimum (IIRC) is 5 tons, and the R23 calculates out to be 6.5 tons 🙂

Dimensions: 22.75' x 8.5' x 5'
Gross/Net Tonnage: (0.67 * LBD) / 100 = ~6.5 tons

The tonnage is in reference to the "cargo" capacity, not the actual weight. The above formula is how you calculate the volume to determine the cargo capacity. I was able to get the dimensions from the Ranger docs and other R23 registration documentation (which is public when you register).

When we bought our R25OB we were given a one page document called “Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, Bill of Sale” which is used when applying to have your boat documented. There was also another form the factory supplied that has all the boats pertinent information. This is also sent in with the document paper work application. You should have this with your paperwork but if not contact your dealer or the factory.

Thanks to everyone for all the great information, I purchased the boat which is a 2021 back in November but here in Maine it’s basically winter then. So it was immediately stored for the winter at the boat dealers marina. The boat was used with 16 hrs on it , apparently the previous owner decided it was too small and ordered a larger one , I am in the process of collecting all of the correct paperwork to be able to do the Coast Guard documentation, which is pretty good because yesterday morning I was not sure it was possible to do,and now with the help of tugnuts users I am on the path to getting it done.
