I am getting my two fire extinguishers serviced today (annual check), and it made me wonder about what if any additional fire extinguishers / suppression systems I should have. It seems like a lot of bigger boats have fireboy systems, but it doesn't seem like it's a requirement or included in the CW/RT line. Outside of the two extinguishers in the cabin, have folks added any anywhere else for the engine compartment, and if so, what kind and where mounted?

When we had Sea Ray boats with gasoline engines (IOs) we had Fireboy suppression systems in the engine compartment. With the diesel engine it does not seem to be as necessary and because it was not a factory option it has not been on our Ranger Tugs. In addition to three fire extinguishers on our R29 (one in the cockpit, one in the salon, & one in the master), we have a fire blanket near the galley stove as the quickest easiest way to extinguish a small cooking fire with little negative effects.

Thanks for the tip. I got an extra (3rd) extinguisher today. The fire blanket is a good idea.

Also the element fire. takes up little space and you can breath if if you have to and it leaves no residue putting out a fire.
Try running down a dock and grabbing a line from a drifting, smoking boat, which has lost engine power, and attempting to pull it too the dock while carrying a regular extinguisher... just put it in your pocket. you cant do that with a regular extinguisher.
I have these in addition to my extinguishers in the boat, car, and home.

I'll second Stuart's post. The other nice thing about the Element sticks is they are light enough that I used command strips to mount one behind the bench on the 'hatch' that lifts up over the cave, so it is close to the cooktop and the engine. The conventional extinguishers are too heavy to mount easily. I also got one for home. The ease of use, and ease of cleanup if it is ever used, were key factors for us.
