In an earlier post I mentioned my interest in the “foldable” Rocna style anchor from Mantus Marine as a spare anchor or for use as a stern anchor.

A 25 pound version of the anchor just arrived via UPS and I wanted to share what you get when you purchase the Mantus. The shipping box is 25.5” by 18” by 3.5” so it should fit in our v-berth storage areas or in the cave. The box frame and bottom are made of plywood with a cardboard cap.

The anchor is delivered in three sections: shank, anchor fluke and roll bar. There are six bolts used to assemble the anchor so that shouldn’t be difficult.

The sections are held in the box with heavy cord but I think you could use really heavy zip ties to put the sections back in the box for storage after use.
For me, being able to store a Rocna style anchor in a smaller space makes a lot of sense!

Edited to add links to photo gallery.

I'll be interested to hear your impressions on how well it works

I’m going to try it as a primary anchor in August during our 16 day San Juan cruise so I’ll report back on our experience with it compared to the Rocna 10.

PS: I should mention that the width of the Rocna 10kg fluke is 14.4” while the same measurement on the Mantus 25 lb (11.3kg) anchor is 19” due to a wider roll bar. So while the Mantus stores smaller, it’s not a smaller anchor when assembled.

I have been trying to make sense of anchor choices. There are a ton of review articles out there with comparisons, and with the same or similar head-to-head contests different ones come out ahead. The one consistent theme I THINK I see is all of the models with the roll bars test well.

So that said, I am curious about whether there was any one thing that led you to that choice? It sounds like you were drawn to the assembly option? Or was there more?

I’ve been very happy with the Rocna 10 in the PNW. Almost made a donation of it at Tenedos Bay last summer which made me think more seriously about getting a spare. Plus, we are most likely headed to Lake Powell in late September and I will need a stern anchor for close to the beach anchoring.
I’ve watched all the conflicting anchor test videos too. In general the Rocna and Mantus seem to test well in a variety of bottom conditions. The Mantus M1 25 lb was probably bigger than I needed for my little 25 Classic, but it was only $20 more than the 17 lb Mantus. For a spare anchor or occasional stern anchor use the folding aspect (with resulting easier storage) of the Mantus M1 won me over.

Thanks. I didn't realize you already used Rocna. So this becomes a folding Rocna for you. Makes a lot of sense when you say the Rocna has worked for you.

I too will be interested to see how you like it. I am looking for a foldable back up anchor that is easier to handle. We have a Rocna 10 and love it. That said we use a second anchor when higher winds are projected for peace of mind or if the bottom for holding might be in question (e.g. lake Powell). Currently we use the factory Lewmar claw as our back up. Frankly it is cumbersome and a PITA to handle manually but better than nothing. While my Rocna has not failed both were set well with 25-30 knot winds when I pulled them up. Thankfully I have only had to use my back up a handful of times.

I, too, have seen a number of posts about the Rocna anchors. People seem to be replacing the factory delivered anchors with these. We have a new CW 32. Is there something I should know about the anchor that was installed by the factory?
