In a couple of months, as we head to the PNW from Michigan, we plan on doing some cruising in the Flaming Gorge on the Green River in Southern Wyoming/Northern Utah. Although we have some information I'm wanting to ask if any of our Tugnutters have been to the Flaming Gorge? If so I'm looking for anchoring recommendations, as I have not found any in the info I do have. In addition if anyone has been do you have any recommended must sees or cautions? Thanks for any and all guidance.

Can't help. Haven't ever been there. But I know people who have negotiated parts of the river in an extended rafting trip. It should be spectacular. So just weighing in here to tell you how much we'll look forward to the story and the photos you post from your trip!

Having written that, it makes me wonder if you could find some good paddle guides to the river that would tell you some of what you are interested in knowing. Just a thought.

Jim (and Lisa),

I genuinely enjoy following your adventures and Flaming Gorge Reservoir is on my list as a place to explore. Looking forward to your report. Although my list is very, very long.....

I just arrived home from a 16 day whitewater raft/kayak graduate class trip on the Grand Canyon (yes, there are boats out there besides tugs) and can tell you first hand that the drought in the Colorado/Green River system is historic in its proportions. For this reason, plan on low reservoir levels during your trip. Although they do manage to keep this reservoir pretty full as the Bureau of Reclamation manages the overall plumbing system of the Colorado and its tribs.

Here is the water supply outlook (to be updated next week):

And the reservoir data:

If you are at all interested in the natural history just below the dam, here is a website that my students put together many years ago when we surveyed the impacts of Flaming Gorge Dam on the Green River from the dam down to Dinosaur National Monument. Some nice scenery shots here:

To repeat, plan on low reservoir levels and amazing scenery. And please report the trip on your great blog!

Hi Jim,

It's been a few years since we were in Flaming Gorge. I hope this link will take you to it on our cruising thread on the C-Brats...

If not, it's on page 17; photos showing some of the scenery.

We enjoyed our time on Flaming Gorge... it kinda reminded me of Lake Powell (on a smaller scale) with greenery! We put in at the Lucerne Marina, a good half-way point for exploring both ways. Not as much boat traffic. We were there in early June that year.

Have fun there!

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Thanks Jim B, Jeff, Gini and several PM posts about boating in the Flaming Gorge. We're not cruising these waters until early July so we'll make some posts on Tugnuts at that time for those interested in cruising here in the future or just plan interested.

Happy Easter
