I have an R29 and plan to install a generic fresh water clean out system by cutting the sea water intake hose and installing a West Marine flush out kit. Any reason not to do it? My thinking is to have the ability to connect a garden hose and then run "saltaway" throught he cooling system. Hopefully this should prolong the life of the exchangers, elbow etc.

One other way to flush out your sea water while you are still in the water is to close your seacock. Unscrew the top to your sea strainer. Run the hose water right into the sea strainer and start the engine. You can also add your salt away at the same time.
This is the same way I flush out my system when I pull my 29 out of the water on the trailer. I don't close my seacock during my process because I am out of the water and so sea water will not back siphon in.

I would not want to add another break in the system that has the potential to fail. The cost is to great!

I also run vinegar into the sea strainer and flush the head a few times. This keeps those lines clean & clear. I do not run the vinegar through the heat exchanger. I do this after I have flushed the heat exchanger.

The method that Stuart described is the recommended way to flush the engine. If you pressurize the system while the engine if off, you can force water into the motor.... I also flushed the head system this way. After shutting down the motor, we simply flushed the head a few times.
