When evaluating boat (in our search), we took out a 2017 Ranger R27 and the marina informed us on sea trail that that model did not have the gap between the inner and outer hull foam filled so the boat ran "loud" from water action on the bow. It was very noticeable.

We have subsequently put a 2018 Cutwater C28 under contract but have not yet had a sea trial. A 2020 C28 we did sea trial ran very quiet (in referring to the hull noise). The marina did not know if and when foam filling or different hull assembly was used on the C28.

Can you advise if the 2018 we have under contract has the foam sound insulation in the hull?

Different hulls, different ride, same construction build. Glued in grid, foam filled.

No issues with hull noise when running in our 28. Great boat for the money. Just the usual water slapping at anchor if you don't get out of the chop.

This post caught my attention as I was unaware that any of the Fluid Motion boats had any material between the hull and liner/grid. When I think of foam filled between hull and liner I think of a Boston Whaler! Foam filled not to be confused with fiberglass that's cored can be confusing for non engineering sailors like me. If there are models that they have started to foam fill I would like more information on such. I would check with your surveyor to get the hull truth about the boat in question.
Just my curiosity! Bob

Had sea trial on 2017 R27 and marina told me they didn't foam fill the hull gap until later years. Foam was for sound insulation not buoyancy.

Trust but verify! Maybe I'm just sceptical but I don't believe everything that I'm told! I don't care what the date on the milk carton says if it doesn't smell good I don't drink it! Bob

I have a 2016 Cutwater that had limber holes plugged with foam. During many of my projects I have found close cell foam between the liner and hull. This foam has different purposes, sound insulation is one reason but strength is the Main reason.

Below is a photo of a Cutwater 28 built in 2016. Look at the core plugs in the stinger. The core plugs is where foam is injected. This was the explanation I was told when purchasing my boat. The best information you could get, call the factory representatives and ask them. Have been on older Tugs that had evidence of foam in the Grid system .

If the R27 was the outboard model it is going to make more noise when at cruising speed because of the hull design. The Cutwater is a semi displacement hull and does not lift like the planing hull does. If the R27 is the inboard I am surprised that you were hearing load noise coming from the forward section.

Mr. BB: Since a limber hole is a drain hole through a frame or other structural member of a boat designed to prevent water accumulating against one side of the frame and allowing it to drain towards the bilge area, why would it have/or be pluged with material? The only sound dampening material that I have seen on any boat built by Fluid Motions has been around the motor area, I may be wrong but correct me if I am! I know of no material between the outer hull and inner hull, a quick look in the fwd bilge area should verify this! Just my understanding of our boats, hope the factory will reply so we will have a better knowledge of our boats. Bob

Bob you are correct the limber holes are a pvc pipe for draining water from different area’s of the boat basically areas outside the grid to the engine bilge area. There is no reason for foam to be in the limber holes or any debris for that matter. On my boat the limber holes ( pvc pipe) were plugged. I assume this happened when they were spraying or injecting the foam. ( they missed!)

Just a follow-up. We did our sea trial of the 2018 Cutwater C28 and did not experience the interior noise of the 2017 Ranger R27. Again, we were working from dealer comments on the R27 being manufactured before foam sound insulation was added and the significant interior noise from wave action when on-plane.

Having said that, the 2018 C28 did not have the noise levels we encountered on the R27 sea trial. To be clear, I do not have any confirmation from Fluid Motion regarding foam being used and it could be just a factor of the different bow designs. Needless to say, we close on the C28 purchase on Monday.
