Footloose and fancy free boat insurance

As a Canadian owner of potentially a very mobile trailerable boat I was wondering if anyone can point me to a good option for comprehensive all risk insurance. My broker/underwriter seems to be all hung up on the geographic scope of any coverage they are prepared to offer. I am looking for Canada and US wide coverage. I suspect if I want to go to Mexico (Sea of Cortez) that might require a special rider or separate policy, but I don't want to be restricting my boating plans due to insurance limitations. Some suggestions of where to shop would be appreciated. Thanks all.

Most insurance companies that cover boats do set up a boat policy based on ones typical geographic boating, the smaller the boating area the less a policy typically costs you. With that said we also wanted a policy that we could come and go as we pleased regarding location (Florida, river system, Great Lakes, PNW,etc), time of year....many policies restrict one from going south below a designated parallel before a certain date and likewise do the same by stating you need to be back north before another, We ended up insuring thru Allstate Insurance and they provided us what we were looking for, so you could check with them or an equivalent. One word of caution, make sure your other coverage is compatible with a traditional boat insurance company.

You also need added coverage on your car insurance for transporting Also don't forget to cover the trailer ..
I was lucky to have someone take over my policy as she had to put me with a different company that was live aboard and travel friendly.. I am sure there are a lot of options out there best to check a few for coverage and price. Be sure to tell them exactly what you plan to do so the policy will cover you. One unexpected bennifit was a 5k towing allowance if I break down when out in the boat.. And rental of a replacement if needed .. I'm sure there are a lot of rental tugs where ever I happen to break down 🙂

Thanks everyone for your ideas. Dolphin Insurance in Vancouver is indeed a good bet for Canadians wishing to venture further afield with their boats. They seem to have relationships with several underwriters who are not paranoid about your boat wandering into areas that are not governed by Canadian law. The entire Continental US and Canada is now potentially subject to my presence - so be forewarned!
