It was time to replace engine anodes. For me doing it this is a first. Well replacing the aft anode was straight forward. However I cannot find the forward anode. Yes I have reviewed the manual but nothing looks right. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello, if you're not seeing the fwd anode then most likely your engine does not have one. The Volvo D4/D6's went from two anodes, to one, and now to none. I have a serial number breakdown for when the changes occurred, please feel free to send me your engine serial number to my email (timbates@rangertugs.com), so I can verify the number of anodes on your exact engine.

My second hand information regarding no anodes is that in taking apart engines for various issues Volvo was finding a lot of an anode chunks in the water coolers. The conjecture is that they were not working. Since the engine is not rebuildable (just quoting here) there seemed to less need to protect the engine or they figured out some other way of doing it.

Ethan,

Not sure what year your D4 is, but ours is a 2014 and we have two engine anodes! One is underneath the charge air cooler and the second is forward, slightly to the port side. Both are facing upward and need a 14mm wrench to remove. You may need a pair of channel lock pliers to remove the old anode from the bolt. Rough up the new anodes before installing.
