While at the Boats a Float Show this past weekend, we were told that boats kept in fresh water should not use zinc anodes but should use magnesium anodes. Apparently the zinc anodes will not protect your boat as well as they are to hard of an alloy for fresh water.

My question to those that keep their boats in fresh water is, have you changed to magnesium or are you currently using the factory installed "zincs"? If you are using zinc, have you seen or had any issues with pitting or damage to any of your underwater metal parts?

My zinc anodes collected the usual deposits from being left in the water. No reaction at all. It was kept in Lake Lanier in GA.

My boat has been in Lake Tahoe for the summer. I'll be pulling her out in a few weeks. I'll inspect the zincs then and let you know.

Boat Zincs and Zinc Anodes

Zinc anodes are used on many different parts of a boat. The shaft of an inboard motor, inside heat exchangers, under the cavitation plate of outboard and sterndrive motor, on the trim tabs, on the rudders, and some also bolt directly to the hull of the vessel.
found this on the world wide wait, hope it helps everyone

There are 3 types of anodes for your boat.

Aluminum Anodes: Which are designed for use in salt, brackish, or fresh water.

Magnesium Anodes: Which are designed specifically for use in freshwater

Zinc Anodes: Which are designed for Salt/Brackish water.

Boat zincs are manufactured by a number of different companies, for instance Martyr and Camp( which The Zinc Doctor deals with mostly) they also come in a number shapes and sizes, to fit virtually any exposed part of metal underwater on your boat. If you are unsure of the application of zincs on your boat, please do not hesitate to call us and ask one of our customer service representatives (508) 406-8000

Hi Dave,
We kept our boats in Lake Union for many years during the winter and Spring and never had a corrosion problem. I think you are safe with the zinc. Just watch for power cords of other boat owners in the water.
