Fresh water Pump failure

My fresh water pump is throwing breaker. I winterized the tank in December after draining it with pump. Filled tank in April and pump throws breaker after 3 to 5 seconds...Any solutions before I dig the pump out and replace it?


Also...dumb question but...is the toilet fresh or raw water???

If you have a 10amp fuse, change it to 15amp. Same thing kept happening on our maiden voyage and that's what we discovered.

Hello TexasEye,

I would first check the strainer on the water pump to ensure there is no debris present causing the pump to work harder than normal. You can access the pump by removing the small cabin heater below the helm step. The fuse should remain the 10A that is currently installed, as you most likely have the older style pump that required that size fuse. The newer pumps do require a 15A. You can easily tell which pump you have by checking the color on the connection points: blue=15A (new style), red=10A (old style). Give me a call in the office with any questions concerning this.

The toilet is a raw-water toilet, which gets its water through the multi-port strainer in the engine compartment.

I was almost positive the toilet was raw water as fresh water connected to a toilet might get nasty...although I have seen boats and motor homes with fresh water toilets.

Do I have to drain the freshwater tank before removing the pump strainer and or pump?

I see a check valve but don't know which way it checks...it also appears the head of tank is below the pump!

I typically run the faucets until the tank is close to empty. Any water that spills below the water pump will make its way into the bilge, but the less the better in my opinion. The check valve is for your city water connection, to avoid backflow into the tank through the dockside connection.
