I've got a stupid question: Today I spent the morning doing a yearly oil change on my 2014 Cutwater C28, All went well until I got to the fuel filter. For the life of me, I could not figure out how to disconnect the switch from the bottom of the filter. I see the wire with the __/\__. Am I supposed to pull that away? Last thing I want to do is break something

Jon, It's so easy that it's complicated, I went through the same thing. Don't force or pull anything it's hard to describe but it's a simple flick on the little tension loaded wire safety. It pops down and dangles. I'm sure someone else could describe it better but give it a try. Hope that helps..

Yes. Simple spring loaded connector, but it's hard to see. Take your time you'll get it.

Once you have the filter off, the water sensor should unscrew from the filter. Be advised, if you use certain fuel additives, it may not come off. The sensor can get completely stuck.

I make sure I have a spare water sensor on hand before I do that job. They are about $75 or so.

Jon, in cases like this where it's impossible to see the item you are working on, I use my camera, with flash on, to take a few pictures of it. If you can visually examine the problem, it makes it a lot easier to figure out. Once you can see the clip via a photo, the steps needed to disconnect it will become clearer.

You need to follow the directions carefully for screwing on the water sensor to the new filter because it is easy to crack the plastic if you overtighten it. I agree with martin 610 that having a spare on hand when you do the change is the safe way to go.

Jon,

I also struggled with getting the water sensor off the fuel filter. I tried pulling the small wire retaining clip out, away from the centerline of the filter. This is the wrong way. You push the wire clip in toward the centerline and it will release the wire assembly. It comes off very easily when you push the wire clip the correct direction.
