Fuel Tank Gauge - R21

Hi: I have a Ranger R21. The fuel tank gauge always reads around half, even when I top the tank up. The fuel reading never falls below about 1/8th. I can see the brass circular plate fitting on top of the tank, with the two wires leading from it. I presume there is a float device inside the tank? If so, to gain access to the float and make adjustments, do I just disconnect the wires and remove the securing screws and then the metal plate to access the float essembly? I had the same problem about a year ago. I removed the wires and cleaned up the connections. It has worked fine ever since.

Yes, simply remove the circular plate and the "float" devise is attached to it. I would have a new gasket to replace the old one (I'm referring to the gasket between the plate and the tank). Is your take translucent plastic so you can see the fuel level? I like that feature on my boat...it lets me confirm the fuel level visually with what the gauge is telling me. So far, my gauge has been accurate.

All good responses. The other thing you can do is an ohm test using a volt meter when the sender is removed. It doesn't matter whether the wires are attached or not. Those senders I believe to be around 30 ohms when full and 240 ohms when empty. Pretty easy check to ensure the sender is functioning properly before you put it back in the tank.
