Hi,
I would appreciate to hear feedback regarding challenges during fueling a RT 21EC. I went to our marina fuel dock to top off the diesel tank and discovered the fuel nozzle was too large to completely insert into the tugs fuel inlet/receiver resulting in diesel burping out of the fuel inlet. Needless to say I couldn’t continue fueling my boat. What are some of the corrective actions and/or feedback on the use of the Cleanway fuel filler device? Thanks.

Be prepared to carry a fuel funnel that will fit your fuel inlet but has a large opening for a high volume fuel nozzle. Many marina only have high volume diesel pumps so they can fill large tanks rapidly. Some marinas may have low volume pumps or an adapter to slow the diesel pump volume and should fit the R-21 fuel inlet but it’s not a sure thing. When we had our 21 a fuel attendant tried to use the high volume pump to fill our tank and made a REAL MESS. Fortunately it was his fault and there was little spillage. Be prepared. Carry a funnel.

A fuel dock problem for a R-21 now that's funny! All joking aside if the fuel nozzle does not fit in the fill tube, than don't use it especially if you are in the water. In 8 years of ownership I don't think I've used a fuel dock but about a dozen times, that said I fill up prior to launching and can usually go more than a week be for topping off for the remainder of a fishing trip. The average engine hours on a boat is about 50 hr per year, the R-21 burners on average about 1/2 gallon per hr = 25 gallons per year. With a 18 gallon tank you should only have this problem once a year! Stay safe! Bob

I appreciate everyone’s feedback and suggestions. Has anyone used the Cleanway fuel filling kit on their RT 21 and if so how did it work out? Thanks, Louis

Many marina fuel docks are setup to fill large volume tanks (100-1000 gallons) and have large fast flow nozzles for that. Sometimes they will have two pumps with one having a standard gas station sized nozzle. You may have to ask for it or call ahead to different fuel docks to find one. Problem with the funnel option is that the big nozzles usually have pretty fast flow and will overwhelm your funnel and then you are in big trouble.

The cleanway is a nice product. It works great.

CAUTION: I love my Cleanway but on some older models the Cleanway can't be used because there is a railing in the way or the filler fitting in on an angle. We tried to use mine on a friend's R25. Didn't work.
