I called Garmin technical support today and discovered they are on V5.2 of their software. I'm still on V4.3, and update which I installed lated last summer after taking delivery of Moondance.

The upgrade applies to several Garmin models. If you aren't up to date, you can read a comprehensive list of upgrades made with each upgrade. The improvements made from 4.8 to 5.0, in particular, do much to improve touch screen responsiveness (the issue I called about) and chart redraw performance during panning and zooming.

I was told you do not need to install the upgrades sequentially. The newest version will bring you up to date. This link takes you to all info, instructions, and the download itself.

Boo hiss -- this requires a $MS PC. I have Apple Mac Pro running Mac OS X. I guess I'll need someone with a PC to create the SD card for me. Any volunteers ? Andrew -- does Ranger offer a local service for this ? I'm willing to pay a small fee for the service. 🙂

"system requirements
IBM-compatible PC running Windows 2000 or later operating system and an available SD card reader."

Couldn't agree more. We're a 3 Mac household. There is no reason Garmin can't use an agnostic file compression/extraction technology. The good (bad) news is Vicki's business (commercial leasing) is dependent on PC only applications, so we have one in the house.

I'm installing the update today. DM your mailing address and I'll drop the chip in the mail to you. You can mail it back or bring it to the rendezvous.

Cheers,

Bruce

Yep -- I guess I could install Parallels which has been lurking on the shelf for over a year now. Had it installed a while back but have since been testing new Snow Leopard OS for Apple so have not bothered re-installing it. 😉

I've PM you. Thanks... 🙂

Apparently my Garmin 5212 is already up-to-date with the software v5.2 as Jeff Messmer informed me today that without the v5.2 update I would not be able to display the Yanmar engine data on the Garmin screen. Ranger applied the software update before delivery -- yea... 😀

Just to make sure you are up to date with your software, just fire up the Garmin and the version will be displayed at the bottom. I believe Garmin did the update for the Yanmar software on version 5.2. Never hurts to check.

I would be happy to send out a new updated chip with the latest version if you have this trouble with the Mac's. All you do is insert the chip with the software when the unit is powered up on the home screen. It does the rest.

I am the one who told Jeff your unit should be updated. If not, just let me know and I can help out.

Thanks Andrew. 🙂 I will check the software version on my Garmin 5212 and post back what I read, and if not v5.2 I will give you a call. 🙂 Thanks for your help in this regards.

BTW - I did fill up the fresh water tank as you instructed and the fresh water gauge indicated FULL. That at least checks out the gauge for proper operation.

I have another issue... I need to obtain the Serial Number for my Garmin 5212 and Autopilot devices. I've scanned the documentation that came with the Garmin 5212 and Autopilot but cannot find anything that indicates how the serial number can be displayed on the screen. The reason I need the SNs is that I want to have Garmin 'push' notification to me when they release new software updates. This is accomplished by me registering the Garmin products via my account on their website. Once this is done then new software release notification should automatically get 'pushed' out to me via Email notification -- well at least this is what the Garmin's web site professes.

Also, I noted that when I tried registering a new account on the Garmin web site with a User Name of "barrysharp". It complained that "barrysharp" was already assigned! So I tried a second time with "barryXsharp" and that took. I then wondered if Ranger had already registered me with an account with "barrysharp" as the User Name. So my question is -- did Ranger setup my Garmin account prior to LAXEY's delivery ?

If anyone who has the update could bring the chip with them to the rendezvous (I HATE that word!) that would be awesome! I'm not even sure how to go about the update... 😳

Hopefully it asks you first. 😉

It doesn't ask you to insert the chip but why would you do that unless you want to update it?

Well, you may have inserted the wrong chip is a reasonable justification... and a display reading "Do you wish to update to the latest 'use at your own risk' ALPHA version 5.999?" would alert you to this.

Typical good practice for any software installation is to ask the user to perform the install activity and not assume to automatically do it. There are of course exceptions but for major software installs a cautionary alert does no harm -- especially if the update cannot be rescinded.

The Garmin system does not auto update. I used Bruce's SD card yesterday to update my Garmin 5212 and its Autopilot from v5.1 to v5.2. The first screen displayed when the system discovered the SD card provides two options.

1) Update software
2) Manage SD card

Touching the "Update software" will cause the Garmin to perform the update install.

So, this is evidence that the Garmin does not auto update as soon as it discovers the SD card. 🙂

I will post my software update experience in another post along with several screen shots so others will not have any surprises.

BTW - the update took close to 10 mins to complete.

Hi all
I am new in the forum and I want to update the garmin software but don´t know if to put the sd card with the update on before turning the garmin on or after. Also do I need to leave the sd card in forever or do I take it off after the installation. Finally ; isn´t that place where the blue chart g2 vision card suposed to be.

Good luck, and BTW welcome to the forum. 🙂

The SD cards can be "hot swapped" - that is, they can be taken out and put in while the chartplotter is booted up. Pop out the Vision card and insert the update card. The plotter will recognize it and launch the update dialog.

Thanks Baz

Your post canot be easier, it is perfect, wonder why garmin doesn´t explaine it that way. The pictures are a nice touch. Thanks to guys like yo we have happy beginners like me.
