I just took delivery of my new R29. I’ve got the latest version of the Garmin navigation system. The 8612 model. Today it had several oddities occur.

Issue #1. At the dock (prior to leaving) I followed the factory directions of powering on the Garmin unit & auto pilot prior to the Volvo gauge. Many of the gauges simply didn’t work. I powered the unit down (holding the power button as the slider on the screen showed that it was going to power off). When turning it back on I would get as far as the first screen where I needed to press “accept”. The units (the dual displays, but not the auto pilot screen) simply shut off. It did this 5 times. I had to turn the house batteries off and then back on. Only then did the Garmin screens power on and stay on.

Issue #2. While underway I noticed that not all gauges would have information. Everything regarding fuel simply didn’t show anything with the exception of “remaining fuel”. That fuel level was at 130 gallons for 1 hour and it never changed. At one point that number started blinking. Then the power gauge, that was fine earlier (showing I was at 14.2, was now blank. I came to a stop, powered everything down, shut off the engines, restarted everything in the sequence starting with the Garmin screens, then the auto pilot, then the Volvo gauge, finally starting the engine. Viola the gauges were showing information, though now I took note that I traveled for an hour with the fuel level never changing.

Issue #3. At one point the radar stopped working. This was a first.

Issue #4. I don’t know if this is just a quirk on how things are wired or what, but when I turn my house batteries on my Garmin screens automatically start up on their own. When I power the screens down they stay off fine enough, but if I shut the house battieries down and then turn them back on low and behold the Garmin screens would turn on.

Has anyone else experienced any such similar gremlins?

Select Settings > System.

Auto Power Up: Controls which devices turn on automatically
when power is applied.

I will check this and see what the settings show. The other issues I’m troubled by.

It sounds like your Garmin unit isn't getting information from the Volvo sensors, so doesn't know how much fuel you're using, and from the radar unit. I would check all connections to make sure they're tight. Other than that, I don't know what would cause the symptoms you describe.

Dan:

As your 2020 R29 CB is brand new (and under full factory warranty) I would at least place a call to RT folk to get your issues on their/your record.

Checking the NEMA backbone connections is not without difficulties as to access it you must crawl down the Cave to its fwd end and remove a panel on starboard side to reach the backbone (along with a head lamp to see things).

I'm assuming Garmin's latest software has been applied by factory.

You don't mention any issues with the Command Bridge Garmin stuff! Are there any ?

Are batteries fully charged ?

As an aside: is your R29 CB in the Port of Edmonds on the north side of R dock ? If so, I'm almost opposite you on Dock S in slip S-28.

I am trying to locate the NEMA backbone on my 2019 RT29 CB. Per Barry’s description of the location can I remove the panel in the cave that provides fresh air into the a/c to access the backbone or do I need to remove the entire panel in the bow end of the cave? Once I locate the backbone I’m guessing you can reach it with both hands to check the connections? Is this where the Volvo NEMA is located as well?

Garmin issues,
I have had plenty of Garmin issues.
We own a 2011 R29 and installed a brand new 8616xsv with software version 18.1 back on April 10th 2020 and it has not worked properly since it was installed. Things don't work properly and the unit tries to reboot.
Garmin had the installer remove the 18.1 software version and install software version 15 and it works but it's not the software version 18.1 it came with and I was told NOT to do updates and if I did it would not work.
Garmin has an issue with the 18.1 software program and said they are working on it but it''s been two months now!
I don't know if you have the same problems but Garmin knows they have an issue with software 18.1.
If it's a brand new boat and you have a warranty I'd talk to the dealer and Garmin ASAP.
Best of luck.

Hello,

In order to access the NEMA backbone you want to remove the forward STRBD ratfur panel, it is a squarish panel that is about 8-9in wide and about 1ft long. Typically there are two screws at the bottom holding in place. Remove this panel and the backbone will be right there. Hope this helps.

Thank you,

Hi,
I just received word that Garmin has a hopeful fix for the software version 18.1 and they are testing it and if all goes well the fix should be out the middle of the month.
Hopefully this helps.

Dave

All is good with our 8616xsv, Garmin found a glitch somewhere in their software and has fixed it. Our new 8616xsv is awesome!
If Garmin from the start had said Dave we got this, the whole thing would have been easier to swallow but it is working great now and we are pretty happy with it.
Thanks Garmin.
Dave
