Hello Tugnutters,

While we took possession of Circle T, our Ranger 29, in January of this year, this is my first post to this website.

We've added both the Garmin AIS 600 plus the Garmin 2gVision chip to the Circle T, and have since gained enough experience and confidence with both to feel good about sharing what we've learned. I've posted a Photo Album titled "Circle T" with pictures and captions to show you the basics.

We live in Los Angeles, and have the Circle T in a slip in Cabrillo Marina just 3 miles from home. Since we're new to boats and boating -- the Circle T is our first boat -- and we're operating out of the very busy Los Angeles / Long Beach Harbor, we decided that the situational awareness that AIS offers with respect to other AIS equipped vessels (mainly commercial) was well worth the cost. That has proven to have been a terrific decision for us, and I can recommend it to you now with confidence. Anyway, I hope you find the photos and captions interesting. I won't go into a long explanation of the system other than what's in the photo album, but would be happy to answer any questions about our experiences.

As a last note, one primary reason we chose the Ranger 29 was that it is trailerable. We are planning on and really looking forward to exploring the PNW next summer with other Ranger Tugnuts, hopefully having the boat there from May to October (that's 2011) or so. Farther in the future we have dreams of seeing part of the Great Loop...

We added AIS to our Garmin 5012 this spring but it was a Comar (receiving, not sending) unit in the $300 range. It was a superb addition for commercially busy NW waters. It can get cluttered and noisy coming into Lake Union or Seattle but, otherwise, valuable for timing the paths of freighters and ferries. And it is instructive (and fun) knowing the speed, course, and destinations of AIS-equipped ships.
