Garmin aquired ActiveCaptain

if you are looking for a backup option on a laptop just install OpenCPN for free and download the free Noaa maps. it really is good - especially with a touch screen win 10 laptop. just plug in a $20 USB GPS puck and off you go.

I have an older surface pro 3 running OPenCPN and its great. I'm planning on installing a teak fiddle to hold the surface in place next to the garmin this year.

Heck for the more technically savvy you can run a raspberry pi with OPenCPN plugged into the 12v tv on the boat.
some kind folks over at sailoog have made it even simpler for raspberry pi users with openplotter. they have built a prebuilt OS with all the software bits already setup including Opencpn, the NMEA network stuff and boat monitoring software!
