Hi all,

Just sharing. My Garmin autopilot pump died end of last summer on my R 27 Classic--radical port side pull. A long ride home from North Channel of Georgian Bay, Lake Huron to Marquette, MI.

I read ALL the threads regarding the pump's issues and fix kits, etc. Finally, had tech guy come out last week to verify the bad news and he had me listen to the pump sounding like a hobby rock tumbler. Never heard the sound because the engine was always running.: impeller and bearing(s) shot. New Garmin 2.1 Liter pump (010-11099-10) @ $1,339!!!! I've read posts that say some Tugnuts have done this several times over their years of Tug ownership?! And Ranger Tugs is continuing to install these as factory stock? I love my boat and have put it to the test on Lake Superior for four summers now--an impeccable boat. But . . . .

Just saying . . .

My R27 classic pump failed last summer. I called Garmin, they had an exchange program for a new pump for $400. I highly advise you give Garmin tech support a call before you "tech guy" orders one for $1340.

I'm calling right now! Do you a phone number if there is one in particular that might get me directly connected if I can't through? Thanks.

I just went through the Garmin web site to find the tech support number and called that. Don't recall who I talked to. They were very helpful.

I forgot to mention that my boat is a 2013. Is Garmin still offering exchanges for that year?

Toki, and all,

Took your advice. Called Garmin fully expecting to experience the usual Verizon, cable, bank, computer repair call experience. But I actually talked to a person who knew what I was talking about and in 20 minutes I had a replacement pump on the the way for $400. My "tech guy" was ready to order and try to install a pump that was a $1000 more! Can't thank you enough and the Tugnuts forum.

Good boating

You owe me a $1000 gin & tonic, and it better have a slice of lime in it!

I've also found Garmin tech support to be excellent. Almost makes up for that horrible autopilot pump they sell.

I have trouble believing those pumps are undersized for our little R27s with their playing card rudders. I think that 1.6L just has some weaknesses. I think Garmin understands this, hence the good deals on replacement pumps. I know Garmin offers the newer "smart pump"and I've seen chatter of retrofitting these into our boats, but that involves a couple more B.O.A.T. bucks.

Toki,

Trust me. On my 200 + mile autopilot-less cruise home last year I would have delivered you in person a dingy full of gin and tonics for a new pump! 😀 Again, much thanks
