Hello, on the way to Catalina my Garmin suddenly went black and got a loud alarm. I think the alarm said speed exceeded but we were only going 10 knots. I managed to get it up again and went to original settings . All is fine now . Any ideas why this happened?

I don't see what year or size boat you have? The reason I mention this because on the older R27's, R25's and maybe others (ours was a 2012 R27) the mast folded straight forward. There is an rubber O ring in the radar connector that if gone bad would let water into the inside of the connection. Some times the O ring would be missing. In either case the water penetration would work a number on the GPS, causing the screen to go black....this happened to us. I had to replace the connector, spray dielectric grease on the connection and make sure I had the rubber O ring. This may or may not be your situation but worth checking out.

Second what Jim said. You want to store the boat with the radar mast up, not folded, any time you are not trailering the boat. Garmin checked & fixed our connection at the 2016 Rendezvous - no charge!
Also, have you updated the software to the latest version? Lots of threads here on how to do that.

completely seperate; could be low battery volts on the house batteries. you will get black screen and weird errors from entire NMEA network with low volts.

Thanks guys! I’ll check the connection asap. Ist time using the board, very helpful
