Garmin VHF 200 repair

Many of us have the Garmin VHF 200 on our boats. The microphone cord insulation on my 8 year old radio has deteriorated exposing the internal wires. This has occurred at the mic and the plug. I went online looking for a replacement and learned that the radio itself has been discontinued. I called Garmin support and was informed that a GHS 10 mic would work if I could locate one, they have been discontinued also and retailed for about $200.00. I have resorted to sending the old mic back to Garmin for repair. For $69.00 plus tax they will replace the mic cord, the repair will take about 10 days.

Good old rubberized tape wrapped tight works well also.

The repair we made held up but it just kept deteriorating in other locations, I would have ended up wrapping the entire length.

Surely Garmin must be aware of this issue. I know of others with the same problem, and I have one where the rubber is beginning to break down too.

I received the refurbished mic today, they are using what appears to be a thicker rubberized insulation on the new power cord. The charge was $49.00 plus tax for the gray mic, the $69.00 that I had originally posted was for black mics.

Yes that is what Gamin told me. At the time I found it on retailers sites but then it showed discontinued. I do not see it on their official site: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/cOnTheW ... ns-p1.html

This company will repair the cable - a bit pricey, but better than a new radio! maxmarineelctronics.com They are in Florida and Nelida will assist you. 754-220-6565

Here's a new twist to an old problem. I used Plasti Dip (liquid, not the spray) to dip the sections of the cord that were delaminating. Great results for about $15. I kind of wish the whole cord had delaminated. It would have been an easier project. It still turned out nice and I expect it to serve me well for many more years.
