On our 2018 R31-S I have a problem reading the VHF display. The Orange backlit screen is allmost unreadable unless I look at it straight in from about a foot away.

Of course, that is totally unsafe when underway, so I end up not using any of the many great features of the VHF.

I wonder why Garmin did not put a bright, easily readable black and white high contrast display in this radio?

Am I the only user with this problem?

Have you tried playing with the display settings like contrast and brightness?

Knotflying -= thank you it s now on my wishlist.

Kip - no reference in the VHF 210 manual to any of these settings, so how do you adjust contrast and brightness?

System Settings
Select MENU > SYSTEM.
DISPLAY: Sets the backlight and contrast levels.
BEEPER: Sets the volume or disables the beeper tone that sounds when you press a key or turn a dial.
AUTO POWER-ON: Sets the radio to turn on automatically when it receives power.
LANGUAGE: Sets the language for the radio.

Found this on line for the radio in their on line manual.

I replaced my mic with a remote mic. Not inexpensive, but what is in the marine world. Definitely makes life easy.

I did the same thing as knotflying. In our boats (R27) the radio is mounted in a location where you can’t see the display when at the helm. Love it! Be aware however that unfortunately you cannot simply swap the remote mic with the standard mic. The remote mic connects through the back of the radio. However the mic comes with all the parts to add a bulkhead mount (e.g., in dash) connector so it is not a problem, just a bit more work.

Kip - have set both contrast and brightness to max, and now the display is visible.

Thanks for all your excellent advice.

We had the remote mike on our R25 (2014 model) and loved it. Naturally we put the original back when we bought the R31. Unfortunately for us but probably profitable for Garmin, the pins are just enough different that the old mic will not work on the new radio. When buying the remote mic be aware that it is model specific.
