Has anyone installed a Garmin Wind Transducer on an R29? Was it difficult to connect into the Garmin chart plotted?
Or is there another wind transducer?
Just looking for wind speed and direction.

I've been thinking about removing the satellite TV dome and adding one of these

It is wireless (both data and power), so should be very easy to get mounted in the location the dome used to be with a small piece of starboard to adjust mounting holes.

An easy upgrade to get wind data without having to re-run cabling (potentially: every vessel seems to have a variation of installations methods over the years) is to add an Airmar 200WX or 220WX (if you need heating for icing conditions). It's an ultrasonic wind sensor that's extremely accurate and has no moving parts to get fouled or damaged from birds or other means. The antenna just connects to NMEA2000 and since it has a built in GPS and compass it can directly replace the Garmin GPS antenna.

It's a whole lot less sophisticated, but I tied a piece of yarn to the burgee pole on the bow. It tells me the relative wind angle and rough velocity. Pretty handy for docking and slow maneuvering.

I’m thinking that’s a lot of money to spend on something that only lets you know what the current wind conditions are and not what it’s going to be in the future!
I fly a flag from the mast and is easily seen from the helm through the skylight hatch, it’s a great aid when coming into port for docking and with experience can predict the speed. I could see the benefit on a sail boat where you are depending on the wind for propulsion but power boats are mostly concerned with wind during docking and close maneuvers, I would be looking at the weather forecast for my underway time and there seems to be plenty of weather apps for this information. My biggest concern when coming into port is the depth of water and surroundings hazards so the less I’m distracted by unnecessary information on the chart plotter the better for me!
Just Bob’s thoughts

While as old sailors, we like the wind data, we find that at 25 knots the data is obviously skewed. We use the old yarn trick (tell tale) to assist when docking. That being said, we did look seriously at this option.
