Tug 21EC: Gear Oil stick does not indicate full line. Hole near the bottom and hole at the top of the stick.
I think I over-filled the tank. Where is no indicator on the stick for the full line. If its not there, how high does the oil come on the stick? The manual says fill to the top of the stick, it comes out when I do that. Don't want to run without enough in there.

Thanks,
Capt Nancy

The Gear Oil dipstick on the on the 21EC is a bit confusing to read, in that it does not have the same format as the engine’s oil level dipstick. The bottom of the gear oil’s dip stick is the low mark. About ¼” up from the bottom is a ring that goes all the way around the dipstick. That is the high mark. When measuring the oil level, remove the filler port cap, wipe the dipstick off and reinsert the dipstick and remove for a reading. DO NOT screw in for a reading. There is only .64 pints (a little over 10 ounces) of lube in this unit.

Thank you so much for your replies. I did over-fill the tank but it ran out!
Now I know.

So just fill the g/b with enough gear oil to that line near the very bottom of the dipstick? Is that warm or cold, or does it matter?

I want to change the gear oil in my R21EC and started by checking the existing oil level. The oil is way above the line (about 3-4 time more). I'm inserting the dipstick without screwing it in. Does that mean the previous owner likely overfilled it?

I went ahead and completely drained the g/b.

Then I added exactly 10 ounces of fresh oil.

Dipstick is near impossible to read with fresh oil against a silver dispstick. Definitely feels very wet above that lower line on the bottom though. If I completely drained it, and added the exact amount per spec, why does it still seem to be reading so high on the dipstick?
