It should be noted on the Mase 4KW generator that the backflow valve placed above the generator will spit water which in my case caused the starter motor pinion gear to rust. Solution: place a hose to drain any excess water that passes the by pass valve into the bilge away from the generator.

I have since learned that the water leak corroding the generator starter motor may come from a leaking water pump seal as well as the diverter valve.
