Has anyone used the Honda eu2000ia hooked to the shore power to run the 16,000 btu A/C? According to what I read in the specs on the generator as well as the A/C it looks like it will work, but before I buy the generator I wanted to see if anyone has had the experience with it.

Thanks

Assume you're talking about your potential new 27 and not your current CD 22?

When I installed AC in both cabins of my Albin, total capacity about 12,000 BTUs, I researched the Honda 2000 genset. The 2000 is only good for about 1800 watts sustained, about 14 amps. I don't know about the amperage draw on the AC unit you're talking about. I had decided to get two of the Honda 2000 units which would have given more than 30 amps startup and around 28 sustained. But, I sold the boat and never got around to buying them.

They have a very good reputation, quiet and economical. Need to consider grounding and CO emissions. Also, storage of gasoline and spark shielded devices in vicinity of unit. Not impossible problems, just things to think about.

Gene's right, you're going to need excess capacity.
Either a 3000, or 2 2000's (you can get a series harness and combine the 2000's for a total of 4000 if you want).
The Hondas are excellent units (either size)

knotflying,

If you click on home, then type honda 2000 in the search box, you will find several previous threads that discuss the issue. A number of folks have reported good results with a honda 2000 for running the A.C.

We have a 2007 R25 but they have the 12000 btu A/C. The 2000i works fine with this AC.

I went back and checked my records for the AC/heat pump units for my Albin. Put one in each cabin, they were each 5,000 btu units. The questions that need to be answered about capacity of a genset to drive AC/heat pump units are the initial draw of amperage and then the sustained draw.

My units must have been heavy consumers.

The boat I sold ( an '01 model) prior to buying my R-21, had a Dometic 13,000 btu roof mount AC/heat unit and a hard-wired Honda E3000 generator. As far as the power needs of the curent crop of AC units go I'm sure they use much less than the units of 9 years ago.

While the generator had no problem running the AC it didn't have anything left to power the microwave. Also, keep in mind that Honda gens operate at increasing RPM's as the AC demand increases so they get louder and use more fuel as the load increases. Depending on your tolerance for noise (and those around you in a quiet anchorage)the sound of a 2000 watt running at full bore or a 3000 at 1/2 speed may also be a condideration. Maybe your dealer will let you listen to both units running?. The 2000 will be much easier to move around.

Will either the 2000 or 3000 Honda fit where the Stock Generator went? It would be nice to have out of sight and maybe even quieter.

I do not think you would want to put the Honda genset in the compartment, because of exhaust and heat. It needs air to cool it and the exhaust needs to vent to air.

I agree with walldog. Putting it in that space is begging for trouble. You would need to vent the exhaust overboard and allow for cooling. I looked into it but in the end decided it was too dangerous. Instead, I put some stainless steel pad eyes on the swim platform, picked up a plastic container that the generator would fit in (the sides come up about 6-7"), and drilled a few holes in the bottom to drain any water that might get into the container. I put down the container, drop in the generator, and strap it all down with cargo straps to the pad eyes. Run the power cord to the shore power connector and you are all set. Since it is on the swim platform you can barely hear it running.
