Would my small Honda 2000 be able to run the A/C on our R-21 while at anchor ?
It would be nice to be able to cool the cabin for short nap on thoes hot /humid days .

If we installed the airconditioning on your R21 it is 12 volt only. The only thing you could do to make it worth while is to plug your battery charger in to your genset to keep the batteries charging while your not running the yanmar engine. Once again if we installed this at the factory we add in a seperate bank of (2) batteries in the rear seat locker on the port side. If you were to run your Air conditioner untill it killed these batteries you would still be able to start your engine and use your house battery to run your electronics. Hope this helps! 😀

You have 12 volt charger output on your 2000 Honda. For use with automotive batteries. Hook the charge to your battery and it should allow you to use the airconditioner until you run out of gas. Max output should be be around 8 amps. The 12 volt charge cable is an option, about $10.00.

I will find out what kind of amperage it pulls but where does the 8 amp charger part come in? We install a 15 amp 3 bank smart charger on all the R21's. I will let you know the amperage draw when I find out from my source.

Very interesting. My 1000 Honda puts out an 8 amp charge so does the 2000 watt. Andrew, your are right , You would get more charge by just plugging the boat into the genset. 2000 watts should handle it. I think that is starting power, 1800 continuous.

We are very pleased with our R-21ec and when we buy our next boat the 25 is on the top of our short list, posting by a factory rep is a great reasurance in the RangerTug company .

I was wondering about something in the factory tec bulleton sect. and did not want to start another thread on the subject when a simple " yes " or " no" will probably answere my question.

I know it sounds stupid and I am far from a 21 expert, but here goes....... Was the Ranger 21 ever offered with a 40 hp. Yanmar ?
In the prop tec section it lists a prop size for a 30hp yanmar and a ( 40hp yanmar ? )
I thought they offered a 20 hp and a 30hp as an upgraded option in the later years,even read about a Volvo 40 hp I think ?

It is not really important but I was just wondering and probably am wrong , so take it easy on me gang,thats what I get for thinking sometimes :?: :roll:

The 12 volt charger circuit on the Honda genny will not cut it.

I don't have one of those systems but a good guess a 5000 btu would draw around 45-50 amps continuous. These AC units are designed to run only when the engine is running and generally require a 50 amp or higher engine mounted alternator.

Seems to me your only alternative would be to install a AC powered, 50+ amp DC charger in you tug. Then all you would have to do is plug the shore power line into the generators 120 volt curcuit. Of course, when your docked, the shore power would keep the AC going as well.

Keep in mind, while the extra batteries in your tug will run the AC unit for a while - they are primarily there as a buffer for starting the compressor and to keep the 12 v power constant during idling and slow running when the alternator is not outputting the 50 amps needed.

The 12 volt airconditioner we install in the R21 will draw a max of 30 amps with the pump running. My idea for that generator was just to run it to turn on your battery charger, which Idle Up is correct. The battery charger installed will not keep up with the air conditioner but it will definately help to run the AC 2x longer then without it at all. On those bank of batteries. You have 200 amp hours on that bank for your Air conditioner. Seems to me that you should be able to run that for quite sometime while on the hook with a fully charged battery bank. We also tie in the alternator to those batteries with a charging relay so while you are underway you are always charging that bank of batteries.

To answer your question about the 40 hp Yanmar. Not a stupid question at all and no one is here to jump on someone for asking a simple question. Yes, we did install a 40 hp Yanmar. Only one. Did it increase the speed? No. I am always here to help with any questions that come up, so keep em coming! 😀

Once again thank you , and don't worry I have plenty of questions.... but promise not to take advantage or bombard you with them all at once.
Along the lines of the higher horse power engine for a little more speed at cruise range .

Has Ranger found any mods to go slightly faster ? My prop is pretty dinged from all of the floating debri (mostly wood ) in the river where I boat,and I was thinking of experimenting with a different prop , has the factory had any luck with pitch or diameter change ?

There is a guy we know in the marina here who pulled his motor out of a 21ec and offered to sell it to me for a spare ,your not going to believe what he is planning to do . He chopped the floor up and is making mounts in the engine bed for an older 4 cyl. mercriuser . I think he said it was a 140hp.The really trick thing he said is fabricating a custom transmission for a test to hook to the shaft, and the engine well looked like he did a really nice job when we saw it.
He has a few go fast deep v's here also , and one they race.
I am giong to ask if I can take a picture and post it here ,you have to see it , it seems like a lot of work and not a practial set up ,but he is serious about it . They are looking for something crazy like around a 30mph top speed :shock:

His friends showed us pictures of the 21 with two good sized outboards mounted on the back and said that was the first test, you know how racers are ... always trying to make things go faster even if they are not designed to do so.
They also showed me where they modified and cut the keel and ran strakes on the bottom. I can't say it's my cup of tea , but I can't wait to see how it comes out


Another quick question is do you have any tips for changing the prop with the boat in the water in case of an emergency,I have dove under the boat to try and see what it would be like ,and it seems possible. I keep a small honda 2hp just in case I need to get out of the channel if power fails and it works ,slow but it works.

John, The racer that seems to be ruining a great tug sounds like a guy that was a guest on c-brats for a time and got cross-wise with a lot of us on the site. He was always on Rangers case about the boat speed and not only vocal, but rude ans used very bad language. He made a comment about outboards on one and a lot of comments about large engines
This is a great site and anything of the wrong intent against Ranger should not be tolerated but I for one would love to see pictures and get reports on any activity that goes on with the tugs out there. There are different strokes for different folks and many times things are tried that will not work due to the base design but it is fun to see what is tried.
The guy loved the 21 look but just could not handle how it was designed to operate One can not have the best of both worlds but it is fun to watch those with money try to have both. If you do not get told to not post, please let us know what you can about the boat.
If this is not the place I would love to pass a PM or so to see what is happening there. The guy was basically asked to not post on c-brats and I agree but have always wondered if he went forward past his mouth. Ron

I can tell you that we have tried about a dozen different props on the R21. The one we use seems to be the best. You are more than welcome to experiment if you would like.

If this gentlemen gets his R21 up and running maybe he should bring it to the Elliot bay Tug Boat Races in Seattle and enter it in the unlimited class :lol:

I feel the speed thing really depends on what you’re doing with the boat - when I lived in Miami, I used to put in at Key Biscayne and it was 25 miles plus, to where we fished off of Fowley Light. A lot of guys don’t want to sit in a boat for 4-5 hours trying to get back and forth. Then again, if you’re just cruising the Intercoastal looking at scenery, it’s great!

On the R-21, can the 12v air conditioner be operated while underway at all speed ranges? Is there a 'clam shell' input trainer to the condenser?
